Enugu Police Arrest 26-Year-Old Armed Robbery Suspect, Recover Locally Made Pistol

ENUGU, Nigeria — Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested a 26-year-old man suspected of belonging to an armed robbery gang and recovered a locally made pistol and a live cartridge from him in Obollo Etiti, Udenu Local Government Area of the state.
The arrest was made on Monday, August 10, 2026, following credible information provided by a member of the public concerning the suspicious activities of a young man who had arrived at a hotel in the community, purportedly to lodge.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Command, Superintendent of Police (SP) Daniel Ndukwe, mnipr, mnisma, on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, the information was received at about 1:45 p.m.
Acting on the information, police operatives moved to the location and searched the suspect's bag. The search reportedly led to the recovery of a locally made pistol and one live cartridge.
The suspect, identified as Chekwube Agbo, was subsequently arrested and taken into police custody along with the recovered weapon and ammunition.
The police said preliminary interrogation indicated that Agbo confessed to being a member of an armed robbery gang allegedly involved in threatening and robbing Point-of-Sale (POS) operators of their valuables.
According to the statement, the suspect also disclosed that other members of the gang fled the area following his arrest.
The Enugu State Police Command said efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend the fleeing suspects, while investigations into the case continue.
The command added that the arrested suspect would be prosecuted in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
SP Daniel Ndukwe, mnipr, mnisma, Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Command, said the incident underscored the importance of collaboration between residents and security agencies in combating crime.
He conveyed the commendation of the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, mspsp, smicm, to the citizen who provided the information that enabled the police to act promptly.
The Commissioner also urged residents of Enugu State to continue providing the police with credible and timely information about suspicious individuals and activities in their communities.
The command assured residents that it would sustain operations aimed at disrupting criminal activities and bringing perpetrators to justice.
The arrest comes amid continuing security efforts across Enugu State, where the police and other security agencies have been intensifying operations against armed robbery, kidnapping and other forms of violent crime.
Authorities have repeatedly stressed that timely information from residents can assist security personnel in identifying criminal networks and preventing planned attacks.
The latest operation at Obollo Etiti also highlights the role of community intelligence in police operations, particularly in situations where suspicious movements or activities are noticed by residents and promptly reported to law enforcement authorities.
The recovered locally made pistol and live cartridge have been retained as exhibits as investigations continue.
The police said members of the public should remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through appropriate security channels rather than confronting suspected criminals themselves.
