Residents of Obudi, Agwa and Egbema communities in Oguta and Ohaji-Egbema Local Government Areas were thrown into panic in the early hours of Saturday, 27 June, 2026 following the alleged abduction of four women by suspected kidnappers along the Obudi–Egbema road.
According to an eyewitness who requested anonymity, the victims were travelling to Ogbafor Agwa Market to sell their farm produce when armed men intercepted them along the Obudi–Egbema farm road. The assailants reportedly whisked away the women, including a woman from Obuokwu community who is married in Egbema.
The victims were said to have been travelling on two motorcycles, while te riders reportedly escaped the attack.
The incident prompted a joint search operation involving officers of the Egbema and Agwa Police Divisions alongside members of the Agwa Local Vigilante. As of the time of filing this report, there was no official confirmation on whether the abductors had been apprehended or if the victims had been rescued.
The latest incident has renewed security concerns along the Obudi–Egbema corridor and surrounding communities. Residents recalled that several roads within the Agwa and Egbema axis, including the Agwa–Ejemekwuru, Agwa–Okwu Ogbaku and Obeakuma–Amakohia routes, had previously witnessed security challenges linked to criminal activities before improved joint security operations restored relative calm.
Community members expressed concern that renewed attacks on the Obudi–Egbema road could negatively affect commercial activities, particularly access to the popular Ogbafor Agwa Market, which serves as an important economic hub for farmers, traders and surrounding communities. They stressed that ensuring the safety of commuters is essential for sustaining local businesses and livelihoods.
Observers have called on relevant authorities to strengthen security presence across vulnerable communities and intensify efforts to address the persistent threat of kidnapping and other violent crimes. They also urged Government and other stakeholders to expedite processes that would enhance grassroots policing and improve community security across the country.
