President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to remain in office until February 2027.
Adeniyi's previous tenure extension was scheduled to expire on August 1, 2026. The latest extension is intended to provide sufficient time for the consolidation of key reforms within the Nigeria Customs Service, particularly the implementation of the National Single Window initiative, while also ensuring a smooth and orderly leadership transition.
According to the directive, the Comptroller-General will work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board during the transition period to facilitate the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and oversee the compulsory retirement of personnel who have either attained the mandatory retirement age of 60 years or completed 35 years of service.
Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s and has built a distinguished career spanning several decades.
He was promoted to the rank of Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023. In June 2023, President Tinubu appointed him as the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service.
The tenure extension is expected to provide continuity in the implementation of ongoing customs modernization programmes and strengthen institutional succession planning within the service.
