Sokoto Boat Tragedy: Death Toll Rises to 52 as Rescue Teams Search for Missing Passengers

GORAU, Goronyo LGA, Sokoto State — At least 52 people have died following the capsizing of an overloaded boat near Gorau community in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State, with emergency responders continuing efforts to recover victims and establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The accident occurred on Thursday, August 20, 2026, as the boat was reportedly transporting farmers and farm labourers to rice farms in the area. Initial reports put the number of passengers at more than 70, although figures varied in early accounts.
The latest death toll of 52 was confirmed on Friday by Tukur Abubakar, Head of Operations of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Sokoto State.
Earlier, the Sokoto State Police Command had reported that 77 people were on board, with 46 bodies recovered and 15 passengers rescued alive, while 16 others were still unaccounted for. The figures subsequently changed as recovery operations continued.
The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) also confirmed that rescue operations were underway following the accident.
Reports from residents and witnesses indicated that a significant number of those on board were children, with about 40 victims reportedly aged between 10 and 15. The passengers were said to include farm owners, labourers and other workers travelling to rice farms.
The boat reportedly capsized shortly after setting out while crossing a waterway near Gorau. Local divers, residents and emergency personnel immediately began searching the water for survivors and victims.
The exact cause of the accident had not been conclusively established as of Friday. However, reports have raised concerns about the number of passengers carried by the vessel and broader safety challenges affecting Nigeria's inland waterways.
The tragedy has left families and residents of Gorau and surrounding communities in mourning, while relatives continue to await information about missing passengers.
Emergency response teams comprising local divers, NEMA, the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency and the police have been involved in the search and recovery operation. Authorities are expected to continue efforts to locate any remaining victims and establish a definitive account of the number of people who were on board.
Boat accidents remain a recurring safety concern on Nigerian waterways, particularly in rural communities where residents depend on boats and canoes to access farms and settlements separated by rivers and streams.
Safety experts and reports on previous incidents have repeatedly identified overcrowding, inadequate maintenance, insufficient life-saving equipment and weak enforcement of waterway regulations as factors that can increase the risk of fatal accidents. Such incidents are particularly common during the rainy season, when water levels and currents can become more difficult to navigate.
Goronyo Local Government Area has previously experienced a fatal boat accident. A separate incident occurred in Kijio community, also in Goronyo, in August 2025, underscoring longstanding concerns over safe transportation for communities that rely on waterways to reach their farms.
The latest disaster has renewed calls for stronger enforcement of passenger limits, compulsory use of life jackets, proper registration and inspection of boats, improved training for operators and better emergency-response capacity in riverine and farming communities.
As recovery efforts continue in Gorau, the immediate priority remains locating those still missing, properly identifying the deceased and supporting families affected by one of the deadliest recent boat disasters reported in Sokoto State.
Authorities are expected to provide further details as the rescue operation progresses and the final casualty figure is established.
