Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has declared that the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) will support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's re-election bid in 2027, pledging to secure at least 50 per cent of the votes in the state for the President.
Soludo made the declaration on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, during the flag-off of APGA's 2027 national campaign.
The governor announced that APGA would not field a presidential candidate in the forthcoming general election, explaining that the party had decided to adopt Tinubu, who is seeking a second term under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Addressing party supporters and stakeholders at the event, Soludo said APGA's decision was informed by what he described as Tinubu's commitment, love and concern for the Igbo people, particularly Anambra State and the South-East region.
"Today, we adopt the APC presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as our candidate," the governor declared.
Soludo also recalled Tinubu's political relationship with the people of Anambra, particularly during his tenure as governor of Lagos State, when, according to him, several indigenes of the state were appointed to strategic government positions.
He argued that the President had demonstrated goodwill towards the South-East and maintained that supporting his re-election would provide the region with an opportunity to strengthen its relationship with the Federal Government.
The Anambra governor acknowledged that Tinubu recorded fewer than 5,000 votes in the state during the 2023 presidential election, a result that reflected the overwhelming support enjoyed by Labour Party candidate and former Anambra governor, Peter Obi, in his home state.
However, Soludo expressed confidence that APGA's political structure and mobilisation capacity could produce a significantly different outcome in 2027.
He consequently pledged that the party would work towards delivering at least 50 per cent of the votes in Anambra State to Tinubu, representing a major political target ahead of the next presidential election.
The governor urged Anambra residents to reconsider their political choices and support the President, arguing that a stronger electoral mandate would give the state and the wider South-East region greater leverage in engaging the Federal Government.
According to him, voting for Tinubu would position the region to negotiate more effectively for infrastructure, economic opportunities and other developmental interventions.
"We need to vote for him in order to sit with the government at the centre and negotiate for the development of the South-East and Anambra State," Soludo said.
The endorsement represents a significant political development ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly given Anambra's strategic importance in the South-East and its association with Peter Obi, whose political influence remains considerable in the state.
Although APGA maintains its identity as a distinct political party, its decision to support Tinubu's presidential ambition signals a political alignment with the ruling APC at the national level.
The success of Soludo's 50 per cent vote target will largely depend on APGA's ability to mobilise its supporters, convince undecided voters and navigate the political influence of opposition parties in Anambra ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
With the campaign season gathering momentum, the proposed alliance is expected to generate further political debate across Anambra State and the wider South-East region.
