Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has approved the release of N300 million as financial support for Imo indigenes returning from South Africa and students of the Nigerian Law School from the state.
Under the initiative, 250 returnees from South Africa will receive N1 million each to facilitate their rehabilitation and reintegration into society, while 100 Imo State students enrolled in the Nigerian Law School will receive N500,000 each to help offset rising living expenses.
The Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Hon. Declan Emelumba, announced the development in a statement issued in Owerri, describing the intervention as part of the governor's commitment to the welfare of Imo citizens.
According to Emelumba, the assistance to the law students followed a passionate appeal for support in view of increasing economic pressures and the high cost of living associated with legal education.
He stated that Governor Uzodimma responded positively to the request, emphasizing the administration's commitment to supporting educational advancement and human capital development.
The Commissioner explained that the financial assistance for the South African returnees was approved as a reintegration fund aimed at helping the beneficiaries recover from the challenges associated with their return and rebuild their lives with dignity.
He noted that the governor considered it necessary to provide immediate support to ease their transition and enable them to reintegrate into their communities with minimal hardship.
Emelumba further said that the intervention aligns with the Shared Prosperity agenda of the Uzodimma administration, which prioritizes the welfare of citizens alongside ongoing infrastructural development across the state.
He also recalled that the governor has consistently extended support to Imo law students, noting that many of them are already beneficiaries of the state government's scholarship programme and other educational assistance initiatives.
