‎Avoiding defeat at the FIFA World Cup does not always guarantee success. While some champions have recovered from early setbacks to lift the trophy, other teams have completed entire tournaments unbeaten only to be eliminated through draws, goal difference, or penalty shootouts.
‎From dramatic knockout exits to painful group-stage eliminations, several countries in World Cup history left the competition without suffering a defeat in normal time.

‎10. Republic of Ireland
‎The Republic of Ireland produced a memorable campaign at the 2002 FIFA World Cup despite internal controversy surrounding the departure of captain Roy Keane before the tournament began. Ireland opened with a draw against Cameroon, held Germany, and secured victory over Saudi Arabia to reach the knockout phase.
‎Their round-of-16 clash against Spain ended level after extra time, but the Irish were eventually eliminated in a penalty shootout, ending the tournament unbeaten.

‎9. Switzerland
‎Switzerland impressed defensively during the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The Swiss defeated Togo and South Korea while also drawing with France to advance from the group stage without conceding a goal.

‎However, their campaign came to an end in the last 16 after a goalless draw against Ukraine. Switzerland lost the subsequent penalty shootout, becoming one of the few teams eliminated unbeaten.

‎8. Costa Rica
‎Costa Rica emerged as one of the biggest surprises of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Placed in a difficult group alongside Uruguay, Italy, and England, the Central American side stunned observers by finishing top.

‎After edging Greece on penalties in the round of 16, Costa Rica faced the Netherlands in the quarter-finals. Another 0-0 draw followed, but this time the Dutch prevailed in the shootout, ending Costa Rica’s historic run.

‎7. Belgium
‎Belgium endured a frustrating World Cup campaign in 1998 despite remaining undefeated. The Red Devils drew all three group-stage matches against the Netherlands, Mexico, and South Korea.
‎Those three stalemates proved costly, as Belgium failed to accumulate enough points to progress to the knockout rounds.

‎6. New Zealand
‎New Zealand made history at the 2010 FIFA World Cup by finishing as the tournament’s only unbeaten side. The All Whites drew all three group-stage matches against Slovakia, Italy, and Paraguay.

‎Despite avoiding defeat entirely, New Zealand failed to qualify for the knockout stage because it did not record a single victory.

‎5. Cameroon
‎Cameroon enjoyed an impressive debut at the 1982 World Cup in Spain. The African nation drew against Peru, Poland, and eventual champions Italy during the group stage.

‎Although unbeaten, Cameroon was eliminated on goals scored, as Italy progressed ahead of them before eventually winning the tournament.

‎4. Scotland
‎Scotland’s 1974 World Cup campaign ended in disappointment despite the team remaining undefeated. The Scots secured a victory over Zaire and earned draws against both Yugoslavia and Brazil.
‎However, goal difference denied Scotland a place in the knockout rounds, making them one of the rare unbeaten teams eliminated in the group stage.

‎3. England
‎England avoided defeat throughout the 1982 World Cup in Spain but still failed to reach the semi-finals. After progressing through the first group stage unbeaten, the Three Lions entered the second group phase.
‎Draws against West Germany and hosts Spain ultimately proved insufficient to secure qualification for the final four.

‎2. Italy
‎Italy thrilled home supporters during the 1990 World Cup with a strong unbeaten run to the semi-finals. The hosts appeared on course for the final before facing Argentina in Naples.

‎After a 1-1 draw, Italy lost on penalties, ending their title hopes despite not losing a match in open play. The Azzurri later defeated England to finish third.

‎1. Brazil
‎Brazil’s 1978 World Cup campaign remains one of the most famous examples of an unbeaten team failing to win the tournament. The Seleção did not lose a single match in Argentina and performed strongly throughout the competition.

‎Nevertheless, the hosts advanced to the final ahead of Brazil on goal difference during the second group stage. Brazil eventually defeated Italy in the third-place play-off, completing the tournament unbeaten but without the title. World Cup Teams That Were Eliminated Without Losing a Match
