Hon. Isaac Ugochukwu Mbika's ₦2 Million Football Tournament Kicks Off August 23 as Stakeholders Laud Bold Youth Development Initiative

OWERRI, Imo State — Football excitement is steadily building across Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State as preparations reach an advanced stage for the maiden edition of the Hon. Isaac Mbika Football Tournament, a grassroots competition expected to bring together talented young footballers from across the constituency.
The tournament, scheduled to kick off on August 23, 2026, at Nkwoeze, Ihioma, the hometown of the sponsor, is already generating widespread interest among football enthusiasts, community leaders and youth groups who see the initiative as a timely investment in sports development and youth empowerment.
Organisers say the competition will feature a ₦2 million prize package, making it one of the richest privately sponsored grassroots football tournaments in Imo State in recent years. While the tournament champions have been confirmed to receive a ₦1 million cash prize, additional rewards for the runners-up, third-place finishers and outstanding individual performers are expected to be unveiled during the opening ceremony.
During a meeting of the tournament's Organising Committee, Chairman of Orlu Coaches, Mr. Uche Oguike, presented the operational budget and expressed confidence that every necessary arrangement was being put in place to ensure a successful competition.
According to Oguike, Hon. Isaac Mbika has undertaken the responsibility of providing all essential materials and logistics required to organise the tournament in line with acceptable football standards. These include footballs, complete sets of jerseys, training bibs, goal nets, corner flags, match documentation, first aid equipment, Football Association affiliations and other technical requirements needed for a professionally managed competition.
He noted that the organisers remain committed to delivering a tournament that will not only entertain football fans but also create an avenue for identifying and nurturing exceptional talents capable of competing at higher levels of the game.
To ensure broad participation and community engagement, matches will be played across six designated centres within Orlu. The approved venues include OTC Okporo, St. Mary's Secondary School Amaifeke, Nkwoeze Ihioma, Umuowa Technical School, Township School Orlu, and Eziachi Secondary School.
The decentralised venue arrangement is expected to attract thousands of spectators from different communities while bringing the excitement of competitive football closer to the people.
Speaking during the committee meeting, the Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Orlu Local Government Area, Hon. Aloma Uchenna, commended Hon. Mbika for choosing sports as a vehicle for youth engagement and community development.
He described the initiative as a positive intervention capable of reducing youth restiveness while creating opportunities for gifted footballers to showcase their abilities before coaches, scouts and football stakeholders.
According to him, sustainable leadership is demonstrated through investments that positively impact people's lives, adding that initiatives that promote sports, education and human capital development deserve encouragement irrespective of political differences.
Hon. Aloma further appealed to participating teams, coaches, supporters and parents to uphold the principles of discipline, respect, fair play and healthy competition throughout the tournament.
"Football remains one of the strongest instruments for promoting peace, friendship and unity among young people. Every participant should see this tournament as an opportunity to build relationships and demonstrate good sportsmanship," he said.
Addressing members of the organising committee, tournament sponsor and ADC candidate for Orlu State Constituency, Hon. Isaac Ugochukwu Mbika, expressed appreciation to the committee members, football coaches and volunteers for their commitment towards making the competition a reality.
Mbika, who also serves as the President-General of the Ex-Iwuanyanwu National Football Professionals Association of Nigeria, said the tournament was conceived primarily to encourage youth development, discover football talents and strengthen community unity through sports.
He stressed that the competition is open to every football-loving son and daughter of Orlu irrespective of political, religious or social affiliation.
Drawing from his years of experience in football administration, Mbika assured participating teams that transparency, professionalism and fairness would guide every stage of the competition.
He also disclosed that plans have been concluded for a colourful opening ceremony expected to attract football stakeholders, traditional rulers, community leaders, sports administrators and supporters from across Imo State.
According to him, beyond the excitement of competition and prize money, the long-term objective is to establish a sustainable football platform capable of producing future stars who can represent Orlu, Imo State and Nigeria at national and international levels.
Grassroots football competitions have continued to play a significant role in Nigeria's football development over the years. Many professional footballers who later represented clubs in the Nigeria Premier Football League and international clubs began their careers through community tournaments organised by private individuals, local associations and sports enthusiasts.
Sports development experts believe that sustained investment in grassroots football provides constructive engagement for young people, promotes healthy living, strengthens social cohesion and creates pathways for professional careers in sports.
