Manchester United forward Amad Diallo scored a dramatic late winner as Ivory Coast stunned Ecuador 1-0 in their opening Group E match of the FIFA World Cup on Sunday.
The contest appeared destined to end in a goalless draw until Diallo struck in the 90th minute, handing the African champions a memorable victory and a perfect start to their campaign.
Introduced just before the hour mark in place of Bazoumana Toure, the 23-year-old reacted quickest to a low cross from the right flank, guiding a first-time finish past Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez to silence the largely Ecuadorian crowd.
The victory marks Ivory Coast's first World Cup win in 12 years, dating back to their 2-1 triumph over Japan at the 2014 tournament in Brazil, and significantly boosts their hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
Ecuador, backed by the majority of the 68,274 spectators at Philadelphia Stadium, controlled large spells of the game but failed to convert their opportunities.
John Yeboah came closest in the first half, smashing a powerful effort against the crossbar after capitalising on uncertain defending, while Alan Minda also rattled the woodwork minutes later after being played through by Pedro Vite.
Ivory Coast responded positively after the interval and nearly took the lead when Elye Wahi connected with Yan Diomande's cross, only to see his effort crash against the crossbar.
Midfielder Seko Fofana later forced an excellent save from Galindez as the Elephants continued to grow into the contest.
With the match seemingly heading for a stalemate, defender Wilfried Singo embarked on a surging run down the right before delivering a precise low cross that Diallo calmly converted with a side-foot finish.
The result leaves Ivory Coast in a strong position ahead of their next Group E fixture against Germany in Toronto on Saturday.
Ecuador, coached by Sebastian Beccacece, will aim to recover when they face tournament debutants Curacao in Kansas City after the Caribbean side suffered a heavy 7-1 defeat to Germany.
Despite entering the tournament with one of the strongest defensive records in South American qualifying—conceding just five goals in 18 matches—Ecuador were unable to maintain that resilience when it mattered most.
Ivory Coast, crowned African champions in 2024, showed resilience, patience and clinical finishing to secure all three points and announce themselves as genuine contenders for a place in the World Cup knockout rounds.
