Austria secured their first FIFA World Cup victory in 36 years after overcoming World Cup debutants Jordan 3-1 in a thrilling Group J encounter at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on Wednesday.
The Austrians dominated the opening stages and deservedly took the lead in the 21st minute when Romano Schmid brilliantly fired into the top corner after a perfectly weighted pass from Xaver Schlager, giving Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila no chance.
Jordan responded with renewed determination after the interval and restored parity in the 50th minute. Forward Ali Olwan produced a composed curling finish that beat the Austrian goalkeeper, igniting hopes of a memorable comeback for the tournament newcomers.
Despite Jordan's resilience and disciplined defending for much of the second half, Austria continued to press for a winner and eventually found the breakthrough deep into stoppage time. Veteran striker Marko Arnautovic calmly converted a penalty in the 102nd minute after a handball offence inside the penalty area.
Austria added a late third goal moments later to seal an impressive 3-1 victory, ending a 36-year wait for a World Cup win since defeating the United States 2-1 in June 1990. The result also highlights the tactical influence of manager Ralf Rangnick, whose organized and disciplined approach has transformed the team's performances.
Jordan, currently ranked 67th in the FIFA rankings, earned widespread praise for their spirited display on their historic World Cup debut. Although defeated, the Asian side demonstrated quality and determination that will boost confidence heading into their remaining group matches.
Attention now shifts to a crucial Group J clash between Jordan and Algeria, while Austria prepare for a blockbuster showdown against defending champions Argentina, led by Lionel Messi.
With the group still finely balanced, Austria's victory has intensified the race for qualification, setting up an exciting battle as the FIFA World Cup group stage continues.
