‎United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has announced that its Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, will retire from the Board of Directors on August 21, 2026, marking the end of a transformative era for one of Africa's leading financial institutions.

‎The announcement, made by the bank, also confirmed the appointment of Emmanuel Nnorom, a current Non-Executive Director on the Board, as the incoming Group Chairman. His appointment will take effect on August 21, 2026, the same day Elumelu officially steps down.

‎Elumelu's retirement concludes years of influential leadership during which UBA strengthened its position as one of Africa's most prominent banking groups. Under his chairmanship, the bank expanded its footprint across more than 20 African countries while also establishing operations in major global financial centres, reinforcing its status as a truly pan-African financial institution.

‎During his tenure, UBA recorded significant growth in assets, profitability, digital banking innovation, and customer base. The bank also deepened its support for trade, financial inclusion, and small and medium-sized enterprises across the continent. His leadership helped position UBA among Africa's most valuable banking brands.

‎Beyond banking, Elumelu earned international recognition for championing entrepreneurship through the Tony Elumelu Foundation, which has empowered thousands of young African entrepreneurs with funding, training, and mentorship under its philosophy of Africapitalism.

‎The appointment of Emmanuel Nnorom is expected to ensure continuity in the bank's corporate governance and long-term strategic vision. Nnorom brings extensive experience in banking, finance, insurance, and corporate leadership, having served on UBA's Board for several years.

‎The announcement has generated widespread reactions from Nigerians, business leaders, and financial analysts. Many described Elumelu's retirement as the end of an important chapter in African banking, praising his vision, corporate leadership, and commitment to entrepreneurship.

‎Several commentators on social media commended his contributions to expanding African banking, creating opportunities for young entrepreneurs, and strengthening investor confidence in UBA. Others congratulated Emmanuel Nnorom on his appointment while expressing optimism that he would sustain the bank's growth trajectory and preserve its strong corporate governance culture.

‎Although Elumelu is stepping down as Group Chairman, many observers believe his influence on African finance, entrepreneurship, and economic development will continue to shape the continent's business landscape for years to come.
