As the countdown to another electoral cycle gathers momentum, the political landscape in Imo State is undergoing a quiet but significant transformation. The era when voters merely identified with political parties without scrutinising the individuals seeking their mandate is gradually giving way to a more discerning electorate—one that increasingly values character, competence, accessibility, and a demonstrable record of service.
This shift in political consciousness presents an opportunity for the people of Orlu State Constituency to redefine representation by electing a legislator whose life story extends far beyond partisan politics. In Hon. Isaac Ugochukwu Mbika, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has presented a candidate whose decades of grassroots engagement, sports administration, youth development, and humanitarian service have earned him recognition across Imo State and beyond.
Hon. Mbika is not stepping into public life because of politics. Rather, politics represents the next phase of a journey already defined by service. As a former international football figure, coach, sports manager, administrator, and talent scout, he has spent years identifying gifted young footballers, mentoring them, connecting them with professional opportunities, and inspiring countless youths to pursue purposeful careers through sports.
That history cannot be dismissed as ordinary.
In a society where unemployment, youth restiveness, and social exclusion continue to pose serious developmental challenges, individuals who have consistently invested in human capital deserve careful consideration whenever leadership positions become available. The essence of representative democracy is to entrust public office to those who have already demonstrated a commitment to improving society.
Perhaps the most compelling aspect of Hon. Mbika's political philosophy is his insistence that "structure is human beings." While the statement may sound simple, it captures an important democratic truth.
Political parties remain indispensable institutions in every democracy, providing platforms for candidates and programmes for governance. Yet, history has repeatedly shown that electoral victories are ultimately secured through public confidence in credible candidates. Across Nigeria, voters have increasingly demonstrated their willingness to support individuals they believe possess integrity, competence, and a genuine desire to serve.
This evolution in voter behaviour should encourage every political actor to prioritise service over slogans and substance over symbolism.
Hon. Mbika's message resonates because it reflects this growing political reality.
Equally significant is the platform on which he seeks election.
The African Democratic Congress has steadily evolved from being perceived as an emerging political platform into one that now commands national attention, with former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and former Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as its presidential candidate and running mate, respectively.
In Imo State, the ADC has continued to consolidate its position with the involvement of notable political figures such as former Governor Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, former Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Gerald Irona, and several experienced stakeholders whose political influence extends across the state. Their participation reflects confidence in the party's growing capacity to provide credible leadership and constructive opposition.
Nationally, the ADC's expanding profile, like the National Chairman, former Senate President, David Mark, National Secretary, Ogbene Rauf Aregbesola, former Governor of Osun State, Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, former Governor of Sokoto State, Abubakar Malami, former former Attorney-General of the Federation, amongst others, reinforces the argument that effective political structures are built not merely on party offices or campaign structures, but on people—leaders with credibility, supporters with conviction, and communities united by a common vision for better governance.
For Orlu State Constituency, however, this election should not merely be about political parties. It should be about representation. What qualities should define a legislator in today's rapidly changing society?
Certainly, effective representation now demands more than attending legislative sittings or sponsoring motions. Lawmakers are expected to understand emerging sectors capable of creating employment, stimulating economic growth, and empowering young people.
This is precisely where Hon. Mbika offers a distinctive advantage.
His extensive experience in sports administration provides him with practical knowledge of an industry that has become one of the world's largest economic sectors. Football and sports generally are no longer merely recreational activities; they are powerful instruments for wealth creation, tourism development, youth empowerment, international partnerships, and economic diversification.
A legislator with practical knowledge of the political economy of sports can champion policies that establish grassroots academies, improve sporting infrastructure, promote talent discovery, encourage private-sector investment, and create opportunities for thousands of young people whose greatest asset is their talent.
Such legislative advocacy would represent a valuable addition to policy conversations within the Imo State House of Assembly.
Beyond his professional accomplishments lies another quality that continues to distinguish Hon. Mbika—his accessibility. Public office should never create unnecessary barriers between elected representatives and the people they serve. Constituents deserve leaders who listen, respond, and remain accountable throughout their tenure.
For years, those who have interacted with Hon. Mbika within sporting and community circles have consistently described him as approachable, compassionate, empathetic, and willing to assist others irrespective of political affiliation or personal benefit.
These are qualities that cannot be manufactured during election campaigns. They are cultivated over decades of genuine human relationships.
Leadership rooted in empathy invariably produces governance rooted in inclusion.
As the people of Orlu prepare to make another important democratic choice, this newspaper believes that elections should provide opportunities for objective assessment rather than emotional partisanship. Every candidate deserves to be evaluated on the strength of his or her ideas, experience, public record, and vision for the future.
Within that context, Hon. Isaac Ugochukwu Mbika presents himself as a candidate whose experience transcends conventional politics. His background in sports management, youth mentorship, talent development, administration, and community engagement equips him with perspectives that could enrich legislative discourse and constituency representation.
If elected, Orlu would not merely send another politician to the Imo State House of Assembly. It would send a legislator with firsthand knowledge of youth development, human capital investment, sports administration, and community empowerment—areas that have become increasingly important to sustainable economic development.
Democracy flourishes when voters reward proven service, integrity, competence, and accountability. Political parties remain important vehicles of democratic participation, but ultimately, it is the quality of individuals occupying public office that determines the success or failure of governance.
The African Democratic Congress has positioned itself as one of the credible alternatives in Nigeria's evolving political landscape, while Hon.
