Falconets Defeat England 3-0 to Reach U-20 World Cup Quarter-Finals

BIELSKO-BIAŁA, POLAND — Nigeria’s Falconets have advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after defeating England’s Young Lionesses 3-0 in their Round of 16 encounter in Poland on Thursday.
The Nigerian U-20 women’s team produced a disciplined display at the Stadion Miejski in Bielsko-Biała, scoring in both halves to secure a comfortable victory and keep their campaign alive in the tournament.
Tosin Rafiu opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 8th minute, giving the Falconets an early advantage. Rafiu capitalised on an England mistake before driving into the box and finishing from a narrow angle past goalkeeper Katie Cox.
England attempted to respond and created several opportunities during the first half. The Young Lionesses came particularly close to equalising when they were awarded a penalty following a VAR review.
However, Falconets captain and goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma produced a crucial save, tipping Rachel Maltby’s penalty onto the crossbar and preserving Nigeria’s 1-0 lead going into the interval. Uzoma also made several important saves during the opening half to deny England’s attackers.
Nigeria returned from the break with renewed attacking intent and doubled their advantage just two minutes into the second half.
Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei scored in the 47th minute, striking after England failed to properly clear a corner. Her goal gave Nigeria a 2-0 advantage and placed the Falconets firmly in control of the tie.
England continued to search for a way back into the contest, but Nigeria remained dangerous on the counterattack.
The Falconets eventually added a third goal in the 73rd minute through substitute Mary Mamudu.
Akekoromowei pressured the England defence and won possession before providing the assist for Mamudu, who finished into an unguarded net to make it 3-0.
The goal effectively settled the contest, with Nigeria maintaining its advantage through the closing stages to secure passage into the last eight.

Mary Mamudu — 73rd minute: Nigeria 3-0 England.
The victory represents a significant turnaround for Nigeria after a difficult start to the tournament. The Falconets opened their Group F campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Spain and subsequently played out a goalless draw against China.
They then responded emphatically in their final group match, defeating New Caledonia 10-1 to finish second in Group F with four points and secure their place in the knockout stage.
The Falconets, who have previously finished as runners-up at the U-20 Women’s World Cup, will now turn their attention to the quarter-finals.
Who Will Nigeria Face Next?
Nigeria’s quarter-final opponent has not yet been confirmed. The Falconets will face the winner of the Poland vs Colombia Round of 16 match.
The quarter-final is scheduled for Sunday, September 20, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. WAT at Stadion Miejski ŁKS Łódź.
The win over England also means Nigeria have maintained their challenge in Poland after recovering strongly from their opening two group matches. The Falconets will now seek to carry their attacking momentum and defensive organisation into the quarter-final as they continue their campaign at the tournament.
