INSIDE AGWA NPL SPORTS NEWS ROUNDUP: WEEK 1 — IKORODU CITY, BARAU SHINE AS RANGERS BEGIN TITLE DEFENCE WITH DRAW

The 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), now branded the EuroMatch-NPFL, opened with an entertaining Matchday One that produced 19 goals, seven home victories and three draws, while no team recorded an away victory.
The opening round immediately suggested that the new campaign could be highly competitive, with established clubs struggling in some fixtures while newcomers and ambitious sides announced themselves impressively.
Ikorodu City Make Early Statement
Ikorodu City emerged as one of the biggest winners of the opening weekend, defeating newly promoted Ranchers Bees 3-1 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
Ranchers Bees shocked the hosts by taking an early lead, but Ikorodu City responded through Umar Dan’Azumi, Abayomi Ayodeji and Farouk Salami to complete a convincing comeback. The result placed the Lagos club at the summit of the early table on goal difference.
Barau FC were equally impressive. The newcomers defeated Nasarawa United 3-1 in Kano, with Joseph Atule, Al’Amin Umar and Sugau Aliyu finding the net.
For Barau, it was more than three points. It was a declaration that the newly promoted club intends to compete rather than simply fight relegation.
Rivers United and Doma United Impress
Rivers United also made an excellent start, beating Plateau United 2-0 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
Abdulrasheed Dabai and Wasiu Falolu scored for the Pride of Rivers, who combined attacking efficiency with a disciplined defensive display to keep a clean sheet.
Doma United, returning to the top flight, produced another impressive result by defeating Sporting Lagos 2-0. Sadiq Rilwan and Daniel Simon were the scorers as Doma immediately demonstrated that promotion has not diminished their competitiveness.
Biggest Surprise: Enyimba Stumble
One of the biggest surprises of Matchday One was Enyimba's 2-1 defeat to Niger Tornadoes.
Aliyu Goyi gave Tornadoes the lead before Enyimba equalised through Wonah Williams. Michael Olalusi, however, struck seven minutes from full time to give the home side all three points.
For nine-time champions Enyimba, the result represents an early warning that reputation alone will not guarantee success in the new campaign.
Underdogs Make Their Presence Felt
Several underdog performances stood out.
Barau FC's 3-1 victory over Nasarawa United was arguably the strongest statement from a promoted side. Doma United's 2-0 victory over Sporting Lagos was another notable result involving two returning top-flight clubs.
Katsina United also deserve credit after holding defending champions Rangers to a 1-1 draw. Luis Dadong put Katsina ahead before Rangers rescued a point through Chibueze Oputa in stoppage time.
Kwara United also showed character by coming from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Kano Pillars, with Alex Jerry scoring both goals for the hosts.
Top Performer and Top Scorer
Alex Jerry of Kwara United was arguably the standout individual goalscorer of Week One after scoring a brace against Kano Pillars, including a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser.
Joseph Atule of Barau FC, Sadiq Rilwan of Doma United, Michael Olalusi of Niger Tornadoes, Farouk Salami of Ikorodu City and Chibueze Oputa of Rangers were among the other players who made strong impressions.
Atule is particularly worth watching after opening Barau's campaign with a goal. He has publicly targeted a 19-to-20-goal season, giving the early Golden Boot race an intriguing storyline.
Rangers Begin Title Defence With a Warning
Defending champions Enugu Rangers began their title defence with a 1-1 draw against Katsina United.
Rangers won their historic ninth NPFL title last season, but their opening result shows that retaining the championship will require consistency and improvement.
The Flying Antelopes remain one of the strongest teams in the division and have the experience, squad quality and winning mentality required for another title challenge.
However, conceding the opening goal and needing a stoppage-time equaliser demonstrates that the champions cannot afford complacency.
Their title defence is therefore alive and promising, but the early evidence suggests they will face serious competition from clubs such as Rivers United, Ikorodu City and other ambitious contenders.
