Goddy Esom Obodo Hails SEPLAT Leadership Workshop, Analysts Call for Greater Community Development Impact

OWERRI, IMO STATE – A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and member of the Imo State University Governing Council, Hon. Goddy Esom Obodo, has commended SEPLAT Energy for organising a two-day leadership capacity-building workshop for stakeholders from its host communities in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.
The workshop, held from July 21 to 22, 2026, was themed "Leadership Capability, Local Content and Sustainable Community Development." It brought together traditional rulers, community leaders, youth and women representatives, government officials, civil society actors, and other stakeholders from communities hosting SEPLAT's operations.
Speaking after the event, Obodo described the training as a timely initiative that would strengthen leadership capacity and promote greater collaboration between the company and its host communities.
According to him, the workshop provided participants with practical knowledge on effective leadership, local content participation, conflict management, and sustainable community development, which are essential for building peaceful and prosperous communities.
He applauded SEPLAT Energy for its consistent investment in human capital development and stakeholder engagement, noting that empowering local leaders remains a vital component of sustainable development in oil-producing communities.
"Leadership is critical to community development. Programmes like this expose community leaders to modern approaches to governance, dialogue, accountability and inclusive development. I commend SEPLAT Energy for creating this platform and urge participants to implement the knowledge gained for the benefit of their people," Obodo said.
The APC chieftain also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that promote peace, economic empowerment, youth inclusion and sustainable development across oil-producing communities in Imo State.
The workshop featured presentations by experts on community leadership, corporate-community relations, local content opportunities, conflict resolution, environmental sustainability and strategies for improving cooperation between host communities and corporate organisations.
SEPLAT Energy has, over the years, implemented several Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programmes across its operational areas, including scholarship schemes, health interventions, educational support, skills acquisition, entrepreneurship development, and community empowerment initiatives.
However, despite acknowledging the importance of leadership development, some public affairs analysts believe that capacity-building programmes should be complemented with more visible and sustainable infrastructure projects that directly improve the living conditions of residents in oil-producing communities.
Speaking to Inside Agwa News, public affairs analyst Chinedu Nwosu described the workshop as commendable but stressed that host communities are increasingly expecting tangible development projects.
"Leadership training is important because communities need informed and responsible leaders. But development must go beyond seminars and workshops. Communities want to see electricity, potable water, quality schools, functional hospitals, employment opportunities and good roads. Those are the real dividends that people expect from companies operating in their environment," he said.
Another analyst, Ngozi Ibekwe, observed that several oil-bearing communities in Imo State continue to struggle with poor infrastructure despite decades of oil exploration.
According to her, communities such as Agwa, Izombe, Orsu Obodo, Ohaji, Egbema and other neighbouring host and transit communities still face significant development challenges, including unreliable electricity supply, inadequate healthcare facilities, poor educational infrastructure, unemployment and deteriorating road networks.
She argued that while leadership development enhances community participation and accountability, sustainable development requires balanced investment in both human capital and physical infrastructure.
"Oil companies should continue investing in leadership development, but they must equally prioritise projects that improve everyday life. Access to clean water, electricity, healthcare, schools and employment opportunities will have a more lasting impact on community welfare," she stated.
Residents from some host communities also expressed hope that the discussions and recommendations from the workshop would translate into stronger collaboration between SEPLAT Energy, community leaders and government institutions in addressing long-standing developmental needs.
Observers maintain that sustainable community development can only be achieved through a combination of effective leadership, transparent stakeholder engagement, responsible corporate investment and active government participation.
They noted that oil-producing communities have continued to contribute significantly to Nigeria's economy and therefore deserve improved infrastructure, environmental protection, youth empowerment programmes and inclusive economic opportunities capable of improving the quality of life for present and future generations.
As expectations continue to rise, stakeholders believe that the success of initiatives such as SEPLAT's leadership workshop will ultimately be measured by the extent to which they lead to practical, sustainable and people-centred development across host and transit communities in Imo State.
