The Nigeria Police Force has intensified efforts to rescue 20 prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and other passengers abducted along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Imo State.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has directed the deployment of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Shehu Umar Nadada, alongside two Commissioners of Police, to coordinate the ongoing rescue operation.

The deployment followed the reported abduction of the prospective corps members and other passengers travelling along the major highway.

According to the police, the senior officers have commenced an on-the-spot assessment of the situation and reviewed the deployment of personnel and operational resources in the affected area.

The police authorities said the assessment is aimed at strengthening the ongoing intelligence-led operation and improving efforts to locate the abducted persons and apprehend those responsible for the incident.
Additional tactical teams and operational assets have also been deployed to strategic locations across the area as part of measures to intensify the search.

The Nigeria Police Force said the operation is being conducted in collaboration with other security agencies, with personnel working to gather intelligence and trace the movement of the abductors.

The DIG Operations, Shehu Umar Nadada, who is coordinating the operation, assured that security personnel would sustain the search until the abducted victims are safely rescued.

He also said efforts would continue to identify and apprehend the perpetrators responsible for the incident.
The police authorities appealed to members of the public to remain calm while security agencies intensify efforts to resolve the situation.

Residents and road users in the area were also urged to provide credible and timely information that could assist security personnel in locating the victims and tracking those behind the abduction.

The Owerri-Onitsha Road is an important transportation corridor linking communities and major commercial centres in Imo and neighbouring states. The reported incident has heightened security concerns along the route, particularly among travellers.

The police assured that the deployment of additional personnel and operational assets was part of a coordinated response aimed at securing the affected area and facilitating the safe recovery of the abducted persons.

The Force further reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and bringing those responsible for the abduction to justice.
The rescue operation remains ongoing as security personnel continue intelligence gathering, surveillance and coordinated searches across strategic locations in the state.

Authorities have advised members of the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by sharing information that may assist the ongoing operation, while avoiding actions that could compromise the safety of the victims or security personnel.
