Jonathan Arrives Bauchi for 2026 Democracy Dialogue, Hails Bala Mohammed’s Hospitality

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has arrived in Bauchi State ahead of the 2026 Democracy Dialogue of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF), scheduled to take place on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
Jonathan arrived in Bauchi on Monday evening as preparations intensified for the high-level conference, which is expected to bring together political leaders, policymakers, academics, civil society actors and other distinguished participants from across Africa and beyond.
The dialogue will be held at the Sir Ahmadu Bello International Conference Centre, Bauchi, with discussions expected to focus on democracy, good governance and the strengthening of democratic institutions across the African continent.
In a statement ahead of the event, Jonathan expressed appreciation to the government and people of Bauchi State for the warm reception accorded him on arrival.
He particularly commended the state government under the leadership of Governor Bala Mohammed for its hospitality and support for the event.
“I deeply appreciate the Government and good people of Bauchi State, under the leadership of His Excellency, Senator Bala Mohammed, CON, for their warm hospitality and gracious reception,” Jonathan said.
The former president said he was looking forward to engaging in “thoughtful and constructive conversations” with participants expected at the dialogue.
He expressed confidence that the deliberations would contribute meaningfully to efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and promoting good governance in Africa.
The 2026 Democracy Dialogue comes at a time when democratic governance across Africa continues to attract intense debate over the consolidation of democratic institutions, electoral integrity, political participation, accountability and peaceful transitions of power.
The Goodluck Jonathan Foundation has increasingly positioned its democracy-focused activities around promoting peaceful democratic processes, good governance, conflict prevention and leadership development.
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, has remained active in continental and international conversations on democracy since leaving office.
His administration oversaw the 2015 presidential election, during which he conceded defeat to Muhammadu Buhari, an action widely recognised as an important moment in Nigeria’s democratic history because of its contribution to a peaceful transfer of power.
The former president has subsequently participated in and led several international election-observation and democracy initiatives, particularly through the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation.
Bauchi as Host
Bauchi, one of Nigeria’s northeastern states, is serving as host of this year’s Democracy Dialogue. The state was created in 1976 and has remained an important political, cultural and economic centre in the northeastern region.
The state capital, Bauchi, is known for its historical significance and proximity to notable tourist attractions, including Yankari National Park, one of Nigeria’s major wildlife and conservation destinations.
Under Governor Bala Mohammed, Bauchi State has continued to feature prominently in national political conversations, while the state government has also hosted a number of national and regional engagements.
The arrival of Jonathan ahead of Tuesday’s event has further placed Bauchi at the centre of discussions on democracy and governance in Africa.
Participants at the 2026 Democracy Dialogue are expected to exchange perspectives on the challenges confronting democratic institutions and explore practical approaches to strengthening governance, accountability and citizen participation.
As political leaders, development experts and civil society representatives converge on Bauchi, attention will be focused on the outcomes of the discussions and the recommendations that may emerge from the conference.
Jonathan said he was optimistic that the dialogue would produce ideas capable of contributing to the advancement of democracy and good governance beyond Nigeria.
The 2026 Democracy Dialogue is scheduled for Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at the Sir Ahmadu Bello International Conference Centre in Bauchi State.
