‎Kidnap Crisis Shuts Oyo Schools as Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike

‎The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to embark on an indefinite strike beginning Monday, June 1, 2026, over the continued abduction of teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area.

‎The industrial action follows the kidnapping of several teachers and students during an attack on a school in the area on May 15, 2026. The victims have remained in captivity, raising serious concerns among education stakeholders and the wider public.

‎Announcing the directive, the union said the prolonged detention of the hostages has created fear, anxiety, and uncertainty within the state's education sector, making it difficult for teachers to continue their duties under the prevailing security situation.

‎The NUT called on the Oyo State Government and relevant security agencies to take urgent and decisive steps to secure the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted teachers and students.

‎The union maintained that the strike would continue until concrete measures are taken to address the situation and guarantee the safety of teachers, students, and school communities across the state.

‎As part of efforts to intensify pressure on the authorities, the NUT has also scheduled nationwide solidarity rallies for Tuesday, June 2, 2026. The rallies are expected to draw participation from teachers and education stakeholders across the country in a show of support for the abducted victims and in demand for improved security in schools.

‎The union reiterated its commitment to protecting the welfare and safety of its members, stressing that no meaningful teaching and learning can take place in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.
