‎Argentina captain Lionel Messi has brushed aside the significance of matching the FIFA World Cup all-time scoring record after inspiring his side to a convincing 3-0 victory over Algeria with a sensational hat-trick.

‎The 38-year-old maestro delivered another unforgettable performance in Kansas City on Tuesday, netting all three goals as the defending champions opened their campaign in emphatic fashion.

‎Messi's treble took his World Cup tally to 16 goals, drawing level with German legend Miroslav Klose as the joint-highest scorer in the tournament's history. Remarkably, it was also the first World Cup hat-trick of his illustrious career.

‎Despite reaching another historic milestone, the Argentine icon insisted that personal records are secondary to the joy of sharing success with those closest to him.

‎"To enjoy this with my family, with my teammates, the ones who are always there, is a really beautiful moment. I'm happy," Messi said after the match.

‎Reflecting on equalling Klose's record, Messi acknowledged the honour but dismissed the importance of statistics, noting that football is about much more than individual achievements.

‎"It's an honour to be there, given what it means to stand alongside Klose or the others. Ronaldo is there too, but I don't think it means anything. Mbappé is there as well, who scored two today. In the end, it's just a statistic and nothing more," he stated.

‎Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni praised his captain's enduring brilliance, saying Messi continues to redefine excellence after two decades at the highest level.

‎"For 20 years, he's had us used to seeing things like this, and he inspires everyone who watches him play," Scaloni said.

‎Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister also underlined Messi's immense influence on the national team, insisting his value remains unmatched.

‎"If anyone thought this group was better off without Leo, today it became clear that Leo is the most important of them all," Mac Allister remarked.

‎Rodrigo De Paul, who provided one of the assists in the victory, summed up the performance in simple terms, describing his captain as "a beast."

‎The commanding win gives Argentina a perfect start to their FIFA World Cup title defence, with Messi once again proving to be the heartbeat of the Albiceleste as they chase another global crown.
