Governor Hope Uzodimma has formally declared his intention to contest for the Imo West Senatorial seat under the platform of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections, setting the stage for a high-profile political contest in Orlu Zone.
Uzodimma announced on Sunday through his verified social media platforms, confirming growing speculations about his next political move after serving as governor of Imo State. His declaration immediately positions him among the leading contenders for the coveted senatorial ticket of the ruling party in the zone.
Also seeking the APC ticket for the Imo West Senatorial District are former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, and the incumbent senator representing the district, Osita Izunaso, raising expectations of an intense political battle within the party.
The governor’s declaration comes barely two weeks after prominent APC stakeholders and leaders from Imo West reportedly purchased the party’s nomination form on his behalf, while publicly endorsing him as their preferred consensus candidate for the race.
In his statement, Uzodimma said his decision followed what he described as a passionate call by the people of Imo West Senatorial District for him to continue serving the zone at the national level. He noted that his aspiration was driven by the desire to strengthen representation, consolidate development efforts, and advance the policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope administration.
The governor further disclosed that he had already appeared before the leadership and screening committee of the APC for the National Assembly primary election, where he reaffirmed his loyalty to the party and commitment to its ideals and vision.
According to Uzodimma, the Imo West senatorial seat remains a mandate for the APC, stressing that he sees himself as a dedicated party candidate entrusted with the responsibility of advancing the interests of both the party and the people of the district.
He maintained that the APC-led government at the federal level had continued to demonstrate commitment to purposeful governance and democratic dividends, adding that sustaining such momentum requires experienced leadership and effective legislative representation at the National Assembly.
Uzodimma emphasized that, if elected, he would focus on quality representation, impactful legislation, infrastructural development, and sustainable progress for the people of Imo West Senatorial District and the nation at large.
