Wike: Rainbow Coalition Will Strengthen Tinubu’s 2027 Electoral Base

PORT HARCOURT, RIVERS STATE — Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed concerns expressed by some All Progressives Congress (APC) governors over the proposed Rainbow coalition, insisting that the political alliance would strengthen rather than weaken President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s electoral base ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike made the remarks in response to concerns reportedly raised by some APC governors during a recent meeting, where they questioned the objectives of the proposed coalition and expressed fears that it could reduce the number of votes available to President Tinubu.
The governors were also reported to have described some promoters of the coalition as politicians who lacked the capacity to challenge the ruling party effectively, while warning that the alliance could undermine Tinubu’s electoral prospects in future elections.
However, Wike rejected the argument, saying the political experience of Rivers State during the 2023 presidential election demonstrated that strategic political alignments could produce electoral advantages rather than losses.
“Where were you when we delivered Rivers State for Tinubu in 2023 without a Rainbow coalition? This Rainbow coalition will increase Tinubu’s votes. If you don’t know how to do it, come and learn from us. There is nothing in learning,” Wike said.
The FCT Minister maintained that political coalitions should be understood from the perspective of strategy, voter behaviour and electoral calculations, rather than being viewed automatically as threats to an incumbent political structure.
According to him, the proposed arrangement could provide a broader platform for coordinating political interests and consolidating support for Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
Wike further argued that political realities in Rivers State had already demonstrated that voters could make different choices across various levels of government during the same election cycle.
“Our people know who they are voting for: President = APC, Senate = APC, House of Reps = PDP,” he said.
The minister's comments come amid continuing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with politicians and political groups exploring possible alliances that could reshape the contest at the presidential, governorship and legislative levels.
The proposed Rainbow coalition has attracted attention within Nigeria’s political space because of the possibility of bringing together politicians and political interests from different parties and ideological
backgrounds.
While some members of the ruling APC have raised concerns about the potential impact of the coalition on Tinubu’s support base, its promoters have continued to frame the arrangement as part of broader efforts to coordinate political interests ahead of the elections.
Wike's position suggests that he views the coalition as potentially complementary to Tinubu’s presidential bid rather than necessarily being an opposition arrangement.
He also challenged politicians who remain uncertain about the strategy behind the proposed alliance to study its structure and objectives before drawing conclusions about its likely electoral consequences.
The minister's remarks are expected to further fuel debate within political circles over the nature of the emerging alliances ahead of the 2027 elections and whether the proposed coalition will ultimately strengthen or weaken existing party structures.
