‎Twelve people were killed in a mass shooting at an informal settlement near Johannesburg, South African police confirmed on Wednesday, as authorities launched an investigation into one of the latest incidents of deadly gun violence in the country.

‎According to police, the attack occurred shortly after 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday when more than 10 armed assailants arrived at the settlement in a vehicle and entered through two separate access points before opening fire on residents at multiple locations.

‎Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the attackers fled the scene in the same vehicle immediately after the shooting, leaving several victims dead and others injured.

‎Authorities said eight adult men and three adult women were pronounced dead at the scene, while another victim later died in the hospital, bringing the total death toll to 12.

‎The incident occurred in the Cleveland area, located about six kilometres east of Johannesburg's city centre, where forensic experts and investigators have commenced evidence collection.

‎Police said the motive behind the attack remains unknown and that no arrests had been made as of the time of filing this report. Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible.

‎The latest shooting highlights South Africa's continuing challenge with violent crime and firearm-related offences. The country records dozens of homicide cases daily, with many shootings linked to organised criminal activities, gang conflicts, and disputes within informal business sectors.

‎Security agencies have urged members of the public with information that could assist the investigation to come forward as efforts continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.
