Tinubu Approves New Salary Structure for Nigerian Armed Forces, Raises Pay by 30%–80%

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with pay increases ranging from 30 to 80 percent across various ranks. The new salary package is scheduled to take effect from September 1, 2026.
The approval marks one of the most significant reviews of military remuneration in recent years and is expected to improve the welfare of officers and soldiers serving in the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, and Nigerian Air Force.
Although the Federal Government has yet to release the detailed salary breakdown for each rank, the adjustment is aimed at addressing long-standing concerns over inadequate remuneration and improving the living conditions of military personnel.
The salary review comes at a time when the Armed Forces continue to confront multiple security challenges across the country, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, oil theft in the Niger Delta, separatist violence in parts of the South-East, and other internal security operations.
Security analysts say the improved salary structure is expected to boost troop morale, enhance operational effectiveness, and encourage greater commitment among personnel serving in difficult and high-risk environments.
The development is also seen as a strategic effort to improve recruitment and retention within the Armed Forces. In recent years, concerns have been raised over the migration of trained military personnel to better-paying opportunities both within and outside the country.
Military welfare has remained a recurring issue, with stakeholders urging successive governments to provide better salaries, improved accommodation, quality healthcare, modern equipment, insurance coverage, and adequate support for families of serving personnel.
The latest salary increase signals the Federal Government's renewed commitment to strengthening the nation's security architecture by investing in the welfare of the men and women responsible for defending Nigeria's territorial integrity.
The implementation of the new salary structure from September is expected to provide financial relief to thousands of military personnel, particularly amid rising living costs and economic pressures affecting households nationwide.

Some public affairs commentators, however, urged the Federal Government to complement the salary increase with sustained investment in modern equipment, quality healthcare, improved barracks, prompt payment of operational allowances, and adequate support for families of fallen and injured soldiers.
The detailed salary structure and implementation guidelines are expected to be released by the relevant government authorities before the September 1 commencement date.
