Special Adviser on Media and Policy Communication to the President, Daniel Bwala, has suggested that the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, could secure more votes than former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 general election.
Bwalremarkedrk during an interview on Symfoni TV on Friday while assessing the political prospects of opposition figures ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The presidential aide, who previously served as spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar's 2023 presidential campaign, said the country's political landscape is evolving rapidly and could significantly influence the voting pattern in the next election.
According to him, Peter Obi's expanding support base has the potential to place him ahead of Atiku in terms of total votes if the current momentum is sustained.
"I fear Peter Obi might get more votes than Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 election, and my other fear is that he might come a distant fourth," Bwala said.
He added that such an outcome could affect Obi's political legacy if the election turns out differently from public expectations.
Bwala also argued that Obi enjoyed substantial institutional support during the 2023 election, noting that several governors, senators, and members of the House of Representatives from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) backed his candidacy.
"In the 2023 election, the PDP had several governors, senators, and Reps who supported him, but right now, there is not a single governor backing him," he stated.
Commenting on Atiku's electoral strength, Bwala maintained that the former vice president has historically struggled to dominate the North-West voting bloc throughout his political career.
His remarks come as political consultations and alignments continue ahead of the 2027 general election, with major opposition figures expected to play significant roles in shaping the contest.
