The Agwa Central Union (ACU), the apex sociocultural and sociopolitical body of Agwa Clan, Oguta LGA, Imo State; has announced Wednesday, December 30, 2026, as the date for its 2026 General Assembly, while reaffirming the restriction on burial ceremonies across Agwa from December 15 2026 to January 2, 2027.

The announcement, issued on Thursday, November 5, 2026, through the National Secretary-General of the Union, Engr. Pascal Ekenze Obodo (R.Eng, COREN, MNSE), was communicated on the central platform of Agwa Clan to enable sons and daughters of Agwa, both at home and in the diaspora, to prepare adequately for the gathering.

In a public notice titled “Restriction on Burial Ceremonies and Convocation of the 2026 Agwa General Assembly,” the ACU leadership stressed that the longstanding restriction on burial ceremonies during the Christmas and New Year period remains in force and has neither been lifted nor modified.

According to the notice, no burial ceremony shall be conducted anywhere in Agwa from December 15, 2026, to January 2, 2027.

The Union urged families, kindreds and communities to respect the established tradition by scheduling burial ceremonies outside the restricted period, noting that compliance is necessary to preserve Agwa's cherished customs, promote harmony and sustain unity among the people.

The ACU also called on all Agwa sons and daughters, irrespective of their communities or places of residence, to participate actively in the December 30 General Assembly.

It explained that the Assembly would provide an important platform for collective reflection, constructive dialogue and meaningful deliberations on critical issues affecting the peace, security, unity and sustainable development of Agwa Clan.

Participants were encouraged to attend with practical ideas and constructive contributions that would advance the collective aspiration of building a more peaceful, progressive and prosperous Agwa.

In a further directive aimed at ensuring maximum participation, the Union announced that no social, traditional or other ceremonies would be permitted anywhere in Agwa on Wednesday, December 30, 2026.

Consequently, individuals, families and groups that have already scheduled ceremonies or programmes for the date were directed to reschedule them, as the day would be reserved exclusively for the General Assembly.

The leadership appealed to all Agwa people to demonstrate patriotism, understanding and cooperation by adhering strictly to the directives, stressing the need to place the collective interest of the clan above personal considerations.

The latest announcement further underscores the commitment of the Agwa Central Union to promoting unity, peace and sustainable development in the clan.

As the recognised central sociocultural and sociopolitical body of Agwa, the ACU has a mandate to defend the collective interests of the people and provide a common platform for addressing issues affecting the clan's progress.

The Union's position also reflects its desire to ensure that the Christmas and New Year period is not distracted by burial ceremonies and competing social activities, but provides an opportunity for collective engagement and developmental discussions on the future of Agwa.

Reaffirming the importance of collective responsibility, the leadership maintained that the future of Agwa belongs to all its sons and daughters, adding that every voice matters in the pursuit of a stronger, more peaceful and prosperous clan.

The public notice was signed by Engr. Pascal Ekenze Obodo, National Secretary-General of ACU, on behalf of the National Executive Council.
