The Nigerian Army, with support from the Nigerian Air Force, has rescued Mrs. Amina Abubakar, wife of the late Major General Rabe Abubakar, from bandits following a coordinated military operation.
Mrs. Abubakar was abducted alongside her husband several weeks ago in an attack that drew national attention. Major General Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, reportedly died during the period of captivity.
The Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, announced the successful rescue on Monday, attributing the operation to sustained search-and-rescue efforts carried out by troops of Operation FASAN YAMMA.
According to the military, security forces intensified offensive operations against criminal elements and mounted sustained pressure on the kidnappers, leading to contact with the armed group at Tunga Village.
Major General Uba said the rescue mission resulted in the successful recovery of Mrs. Abubakar despite efforts by the bandits to evade advancing troops.
He disclosed that the kidnappers shot Mrs. Abubakar during the encounter before abandoning her and fleeing under intense military pressure.
The rescued victim was immediately evacuated from the scene and transported to a military medical facility, where she is receiving urgent treatment.
The Defence Headquarters stated that Mrs. Abubakar is responding positively to medical care and continues to receive treatment at a military hospital.
It added that the Armed Forces of Nigeria are providing all necessary medical support to aid her recovery while extending assistance to her family.
"The leadership of the Armed Forces of Nigeria remains committed to ensuring her full recovery and is providing all necessary support to her family," the statement said.
Meanwhile, security agencies have intensified efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects and dismantle the criminal network responsible for the abduction.
The Defence Headquarters reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining military operations against terrorists, kidnappers, and other criminal groups across the country.
According to the military, troops will continue offensive operations in Katsina State and other affected areas as part of broader efforts to improve security and restore peace nationwide.
The rescue comes amid ongoing military campaigns targeting banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism in Nigeria's North-West and other regions, where security forces say they have recorded a number of operational gains in recent months.
