Bartholomew Egbu Laid to Rest Amidst Tears as Fr. Ogbonna, Ohanumma, Hon. Eberendu, Fr. Akalador Attend Burial

An atmosphere of deep grief, solemn reflection and Christian hope enveloped Obudi, Agwa in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State on Wednesday as family members, Catholic clergy, religious sisters, community leaders, friends and sympathisers gathered to bid a final farewell to Bartholomew Chukwuma Egbu (PhD-in-view), who was laid to rest in his ancestral home.
The funeral rites commenced with the departure of the deceased's body from Gateway Mortuary in a motorcade. The procession made a brief stop at his maternal home in Ubah, Agwa, where relatives paid their last respects before proceeding to his family compound in Umuahii, Obudi. It thereafter continued to his personal residence in Ubah, Agwa Autonomous Community, where the final burial ceremonies were held.
The burial attracted a large congregation of mourners drawn from different parts of Imo State and beyond, reflecting the widespread respect and affection enjoyed by the late Bartholomew Egbu during his lifetime.
Among the Catholic clergy who attended the burial were Very Rev. Fr. Hyginus Ogbonna, Very Rev. Fr. Cosmos Ohanumma, and Rev. Fr. Saviour Obinna Akalador. Also present were Rev. Sr. Jovita Nwokeocha and Sr. Mary Queen, whose presence demonstrated solidarity with the Egbu family while also recalling the memory of the late Rev. Fr. Ifeanyi Egbu, whose passing nearly two decades ago remains deeply remembered within the community.
Delivering the funeral homily titled "Stop and Think," the preacher called on Christians to reflect on the brevity of life, the certainty of death and the importance of maintaining a genuine relationship with God.
"We are called today in this sermon to stop and think. I spoke with the man in this casket recently before he died. We had plans, we discussed issues of development and he assured me of his part in the discussions, but today, I am here preaching for his burial. That is how fragile life is, and the more reason we should reflect, stop and think about our life and eternity."
The sermon resonated deeply with mourners, many of whom were visibly emotional as the preacher reminded them that earthly achievements, positions and aspirations are temporary, while eternity remains the ultimate destination of every human being.
An emotional biography of the deceased was read by Mmachukwu, chronicling Bartholomew Egbu's educational journey, professional accomplishments, family life, Christian faith and commitment to community development.
According to the biography, the late Egbu had recently experienced significant career advancement, having been promoted to the position of Manager at his workplace in June 2026. Family members described the promotion as a moment of great joy and fulfilment, but noted that the celebration was tragically cut short by his sudden death, leaving loved ones in profound sorrow.
The biography further portrayed him as a humble, hardworking and visionary individual whose pursuit of academic excellence continued until his passing, as he was undertaking doctoral studies.
Emotions reached their peak during the final interment as the casket was respectfully lowered into the grave using a mechanical casket-lowering device. Many mourners struggled to hold back tears as family members, friends and well-wishers paid their final respects, marking the end of the earthly journey of a man fondly known as "Barth."
The large turnout of priests, religious sisters, community leaders, relatives and associates underscored the lasting impact of the deceased's life and highlighted the enduring values of family unity, friendship, faith and communal solidarity in times of bereavement.
Speaking after the burial, several attendees described the late Bartholomew Egbu as a peaceful, dedicated and compassionate individual whose contributions to his profession, community and family would not be forgotten.
Among dignitaries present at the burial were Hon. Angel Hilary Eberendu, former Chairman of Oguta Local Government Area; Sir Jude Egbu; Sir Cajetan Egbu; and Mr. Charles Akalador, Chairman of Obudi Development Union, Abuja Branch, alongside numerous traditional leaders, professionals, associates and members of various community organisations.
The burial ceremony concluded with prayers for the peaceful repose of the deceased's soul as sympathisers continued to console the bereaved family, encouraging them to draw strength from their Christian faith and the enduring legacy left behind by Bartholomew Chukwuma Egbu.
Though his earthly journey has come to an end, mourners agreed that his life of service, dedication, academic pursuit and commitment to humanity will continue to inspire those who knew him, while the solemn message of the day—"Stop and Think"—served as a reminder of life's fragility and the importance of living each day with purpose, faith and readiness for eternity.
