Catholic Bishops Urge Tinubu to Ensure Election Results Reflect Nigerians' True Choice

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that future election results genuinely reflect the true choice of Nigerian voters, stressing that credible elections remain the cornerstone of democracy, national stability, and sustainable development.
The bishops made the appeal while speaking on the state of the nation, expressing concern over growing public distrust in Nigeria's electoral process. They emphasized that democratic leadership derives its legitimacy from the freely expressed will of the people and urged political leaders to protect the sanctity of the ballot.
According to the clerics, every Nigerian deserves the assurance that their vote counts and that electoral outcomes faithfully represent the wishes of the electorate. They noted that transparent and credible elections are essential for strengthening public confidence in democratic institutions and promoting peaceful governance.
The bishops urged President Tinubu to demonstrate unwavering commitment to democratic principles by ensuring that all relevant institutions responsible for conducting elections operate independently, transparently, and in accordance with the law.
They also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, political parties, and other stakeholders to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, fairness, and accountability before, during, and after elections.
The Catholic leaders stressed that electoral credibility is not merely a political issue but a moral obligation that directly affects national unity, economic progress, and social cohesion. They warned that disputed election outcomes often fuel political tension, undermine citizens' confidence in government, and threaten national peace.
The bishops further appealed to political actors to place the country's collective interest above partisan ambitions, urging them to reject violence, vote-buying, intimidation, misinformation, and every form of electoral malpractice capable of weakening Nigeria's democracy.
They maintained that leaders at every level of government must remain accountable to the people and govern with integrity, justice, and respect for the rule of law.
The latest appeal comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum across the country. Political parties have intensified consultations, coalition talks, and grassroots mobilization, while civil society organizations and religious bodies continue to advocate reforms aimed at strengthening electoral transparency.
Over the years, Nigeria's elections have attracted criticism over allegations of irregularities, logistical challenges, violence, and litigation. Although electoral reforms introduced in recent years, including the deployment of technology, have been praised in some quarters, stakeholders continue to demand further improvements to guarantee credible and widely accepted elections.
The Catholic Bishops have consistently remained vocal on issues of governance, insecurity, corruption, economic hardship, and electoral integrity. Through communiqués and public statements, the conference has repeatedly encouraged leaders to embrace justice, fairness, and good governance while urging citizens to remain peaceful and actively participate in democratic processes.

Some analysts argued that strengthening the independence of electoral institutions and ensuring impartial law enforcement during elections would significantly enhance public trust in Nigeria's democratic system.
