EFCC Detains Activists Mama P, Peter4Nigeria After Abuja Invitation, Raises Concerns Over Opposition Crackdown

Activists Precious Oruche, popularly known as Mama P, and Peter Akah, widely known as Peter4Nigeria, are reportedly being held by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after honouring an official invitation from the anti-graft agency in Abuja on Thursday.
The two activists were said to have voluntarily appeared before the commission following the invitation. However, as of the time of filing this report, they had not been released, a development that has sparked concern among their supporters, legal representatives and political associates.
Neither the EFCC nor the activists' legal team had publicly disclosed the specific reasons for the invitation or the circumstances surrounding their continued detention.
The lack of official clarification has fuelled widespread speculation on social media, with supporters alleging that the invitation may be politically motivated. However, these allegations remain unverified, and the EFCC has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
Several opposition figures and civil society voices have reacted to the development, warning against any action that could be interpreted as an attempt to intimidate critics of the government.
Mathias Okon, a youth leader from Cross River State, urged Nigerians to remain vigilant while calling for the immediate respect of the activists' constitutional rights.
"Nothing should happen to Peter Akah, and Nigerians should remain vigilant over this invitation. Opposition must express themselves. This is democracy, not a military regime. It is even worse when we have a president who claims to be fighting for democracy," Okon said.
An opposition figure, Alero Yari, identified as a National Democratic Congress (NDC) chieftain from Kano State, questioned what she described as increasing pressure on dissenting voices.
"What are they afraid of? Opposition politics is the way forward. A nation ruled by leaders who are detached from the people is a cursed future," she stated.
Similarly, Abdullahi Kashim, an African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain from Sokoto State, called on the Federal Government to ensure that anti-corruption institutions remain independent and free from political influence.
"The APC-led Bola Tinubu government should come out clean and not hide under anti-graft agencies to suppress opposition voices. We have also seen concerns raised over the bail conditions imposed on former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. Democracy must prevail in this country," Kashim remarked.
His comments reflect the position of his political party and have not been independently verified.
Growing Debate Over Civic Space
The reported detention has renewed public debate over civic freedoms, political opposition and the role of law enforcement agencies in Nigeria's democratic system.
Legal analysts have consistently maintained that while anti-corruption agencies possess constitutional powers to investigate individuals, such powers must be exercised within the confines of the law, with full respect for due process and the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution.
Human rights advocates have repeatedly argued that prolonged detention without public disclosure of allegations or prompt access to legal representation can erode public confidence in law enforcement institutions. They have therefore called for transparency whenever high-profile investigations involve political figures or activists.
Political observers also note that democratic societies thrive when both government and opposition are allowed to operate freely under the rule of law. According to governance experts, allegations of politically motivated investigations should always be addressed through transparent legal processes rather than public speculation.
As of press time, neither the EFCC nor the Federal Government had issued an official statement explaining why the two activists remained in custody.
Their supporters continue to demand their release or a formal explanation regarding the nature of the investigation.
The situation is expected to attract further public attention as Nigerians await an official response from the anti-graft agency.
