Ekweremadu to Remain in UK Custody Until Possible Mid-2027 Release
By Bernard Chizitere Olekamma
Former Nigerian Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, remains in British custody as he continues serving his prison sentence following his conviction in the United Kingdom’s landmark organ trafficking case.
Ekweremadu was sentenced on May 5, 2023, to nine years and eight months imprisonment by a UK court after being found guilty in a case that drew significant international attention and diplomatic interest.
The former senator is expected to remain incarcerated until around mid-2027, when he may become eligible for standard release on licence under British correctional regulations, subject to prison conduct requirements and post-release supervision conditions.
Reports indicate that Ekweremadu has already spent more than three years in custody, including the period following his arrest in 2022. He is believed to still be held at HM Prison Wandsworth.
The United Kingdom authorities had previously declined requests by the Nigerian government seeking his transfer back to Nigeria, maintaining that he should complete his sentence within the British judicial and correctional system.
His wife, Beatrice Ekweremadu, who was also convicted in the same case and handed a shorter sentence, was released earlier and reportedly returned to Nigeria in January 2026.
As of now, there have been no fresh court proceedings or official announcements regarding any possible early release or alteration to Ekweremadu’s sentence, although diplomatic engagements concerning his situation are understood to still be ongoing between relevant authorities.
