The Federal Government has officially launched FreeTV on June 17, 2026, introducing a nationwide digital broadcasting platform aimed at expanding access to free television content for households across Nigeria.
The initiative provides viewers with access to more than 100 national, regional, and state-based channels. The offerings include news, sports, educational programming, and multilingual content, with dedicated broadcasts in Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo languages.
According to officials, the platform is designed to eliminate monthly subscription fees while promoting wider access to information and entertainment across diverse audiences in the country.
FreeTV services are available through satellite and terrestrial transmission systems, as well as via a dedicated mobile application, allowing users to access content across multiple devices.
The government further explained that existing television sets can be used with compatible DVB-T2 or DVB-S2 decoders. It also noted that several currently available free-to-air decoders may already support the service, making adoption easier for many households.
The rollout is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen digital inclusion and improve access to public broadcasting infrastructure nationwide.
