‎Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, and his wife have been abducted by suspected bandits in Katsina State.

‎The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, May 28 2026, along the Matazu axis of the state while the couple was travelling to an undisclosed destination.

‎Sources familiar with the incident said the attackers intercepted the vehicle conveying the retired military officer and his wife before taking them away to an unknown location.

‎The couple's driver reportedly escaped from the scene despite sustaining a gunshot wound during the attack. He was later rescued and is receiving medical attention.

‎Security operatives subsequently recovered the victims' vehicle during a search operation launched after the abduction was reported.

‎As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not issued an official statement on the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping or the efforts being made to secure the release of the victims.

‎The abduction has generated concern among residents and security observers, given Major General Abubakar's distinguished military career and his previous role as spokesman for the Nigerian Armed Forces.

‎The incident also comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb banditry and other violent crimes across parts of the North-West region.

‎Authorities have continued to assure Nigerians of intensified operations against criminal groups operating in affected areas, while investigations into the latest incident are expected to continue.
