The Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, is facing growing public scrutiny following allegations that ₦54 billion was improperly transferred from the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) for the purported upgrade of crude oil and gas metering infrastructure.
According to reports circulating in the public domain, the transaction was backed by a memo dated July 4, 2023, which allegedly sought presidential approval for the release of the funds. Critics have questioned the legal basis of the transfer, claiming it was facilitated through a disputed or allegedly forged legal framework to obtain executive authorization.
The allegations have sparked widespread debate over transparency and accountability in the management of public funds, with several civil society organizations calling for an independent investigation into the transaction.
However, supporters of the administration insist that the expenditure falls within the constitutional and statutory powers of the Executive, arguing that no evidence has yet been presented to establish any wrongdoing by the Chief of Staff or other government officials.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Presidency nor the NUPRC had issued a detailed official response specifically addressing the latest allegations. No law enforcement agency has announced an investigation, and no court has made any finding regarding the claims.
The controversy continues to generate intense public interest, with stakeholders urging the government to provide greater clarity on the approval process, the legal authority relied upon, and the utilization of the funds.
