The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has provided clarification on the ongoing national debate surrounding police reforms and the proposed establishment of state-level policing structures.
He explained that the initiative to introduce state police is not intended to weaken or replace the existing federal policing system but to complement it within a more decentralized security framework.
According to the IGP, the Nigeria Police Force will remain the country’s primary law enforcement agency, responsible for enforcing federal laws and maintaining national security across all states of the federation.
He further stated that the proposed state police system is designed to improve community-based policing, enhance intelligence gathering at the local level, and ensure faster response to security challenges within communities.
The reform, he noted, is part of broader efforts to build a more efficient and collaborative security architecture that integrates both federal and subnational policing institution.
