The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has criticized the Federal Government over what it described as its inability to effectively tackle rising insecurity, worsening economic conditions, and increasing threats to Nigeria's democratic institutions.
Addressing journalists at the National Assembly in Abuja, the Minority Leader, Hon. Fred Agbedi, said the country is experiencing one of its most challenging periods since the return to democratic rule in 1999. According to him, millions of Nigerians are grappling with poverty, insecurity, and growing frustration over the state of the nation.
The caucus alleged that the current administration appears to be placing greater emphasis on political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections rather than implementing policies aimed at addressing pressing national challenges. The lawmakers maintained that governance should remain focused on improving the welfare and security of citizens.
Explaining the reason for the briefing, the opposition lawmakers said they convened the media interaction "with a heavy heart but a strong determination to speak the truth," stressing that remaining silent in the face of the country's challenges would amount to neglecting their constitutional responsibility.
The caucus also expressed concern over the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar following his abduction, describing the incident as a tragic reflection of the deteriorating security situation across the country. The lawmakers called on relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death and strengthen measures to protect lives and property.
They reiterated the need for urgent and coordinated action to address insecurity, revive the economy, and safeguard democratic institutions, emphasizing that these issues require collective national commitment beyond partisan interests.
