The Rivers State Police Command has announced a temporary restriction of movement across seven local government areas ahead of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District by-election scheduled for Saturday.
According to the command, the restriction will take effect from midnight on Friday and remain in force until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. The affected local government areas are Andoni, Tai, Khana, Gokana, Eleme, Oyigbo, and Opobo/Nkoro.
The police said the directive is part of comprehensive security measures designed to ensure a peaceful, free, and credible electoral process. The restriction is also intended to safeguard voters, election officials, and electoral materials while preventing violence, vote-buying, and other forms of electoral malpractice.
Despite the movement restriction, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security personnel deployed for election duties, ambulance operators, firefighters, and other approved essential service providers will be permitted to carry out their responsibilities throughout the period.
The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, appealed to political parties, candidates, supporters, and residents to conduct themselves peacefully and comply with all lawful directives issued for the election.
He warned that the command would take decisive action against individuals or groups involved in election-related violence or any activity capable of disrupting the by-election, stressing that offenders would face the full weight of the law.
The Rivers State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring that eligible voters exercise their civic rights in a safe and secure environment.
