Nnamdi Kanu Sacks Longtime Lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Announces New Legal Team

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has officially announced the removal of his longtime lead counsel, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, marking a significant shift in the legal strategy surrounding his prolonged trial.
In a statement issued from the detention facility where he is being held by the Department of State Services (DSS), Kanu said the decision, though difficult, became necessary to realign his legal defence and better safeguard his constitutional rights and fundamental liberties.
According to him, the restructuring of his legal team is aimed at bringing renewed clarity, absolute dedication, and strategic focus to the legal proceedings that have continued to attract national and international attention.
Kanu expressed appreciation to Ejiofor for his years of service and commitment to his legal battles, stressing that the decision should not be interpreted as a dismissal of previous efforts but rather as a strategic move necessitated by the current realities of his case.
"This difficult decision was necessary to realign my defence and safeguard my fundamental liberties," Kanu said, adding that the next phase of his legal journey requires a fresh approach to representation.
He further reassured members and supporters of the IPOB movement that his determination remains unwavering despite his continued detention.
According to him, every decision being taken is guided by the collective pursuit of justice and the eventual vindication of those who have remained committed to the cause.
Kanu urged his supporters across Nigeria and in the diaspora to remain calm, united and steadfast, insisting that the legal changes would strengthen, rather than weaken, his defence before the courts.
He also directed that all future legal correspondence, consultations and official instructions concerning his case should henceforth be handled exclusively by the newly constituted legal team.
"As we enter this critical and definitive phase, I urge all faithful supporters to remain united and unwavering in faith," he stated.
The announcement immediately generated widespread reactions among supporters, legal observers and political commentators, many of whom described the development as one of the most significant changes in Kanu's legal representation since his arrest and extraordinary rendition to Nigeria in 2021.
