The apex socio-political youth body in Okigwe Zone, Okigwe Zone Youths Mandate, has rejected the emergence of Mr. Uchenna Agasu as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Okigwe North Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement jointly signed by its National President, Evang. Kelechi Uzomah, and Secretary General, Engr. Chinedu Onuoha, the group described Agasu’s emergence as irregular and inconsistent with the party’s nomination process.
According to the group, Uchenna Agasu reportedly purchased Nomination and Expression of Interest Forms to contest for the Onuimo State Constituency seat in the Imo State House of Assembly, but was later announced as the APC candidate for the House of Representatives seat for Okigwe North Federal Constituency.
The group expressed concern over what it termed a “political contradiction,” questioning how an aspirant who allegedly campaigned for a State Assembly position could emerge as the party’s standard bearer for a federal legislative seat.
While noting that the matter concerns the internal affairs of the APC, the youth body said it decided to speak out as critical stakeholders in Okigwe Zone, insisting that the development could create disaffection within the party and among supporters across the constituency.
The statement further alleged that aspirants who genuinely purchased forms and actively campaigned for the Okigwe North Federal Constituency position were unfairly sidelined in the process.
The group therefore called on the leadership of the APC to urgently review the outcome and address what it described as an error capable of deepening divisions within the party’s political structure in Okigwe Zone.
They appealed to the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, the APC National Working Committee, the party’s Appeal Panel, the National Chairman of the APC, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and ensure what they termed “justice and fairness” for aspirants who contested for the federal constituency ticket.
The youth group maintained that Uchenna Agasu should instead be allowed to pursue the Onuimo State Constituency seat, which they claimed was the office he originally sought to contest.
The statement also argued that the House of Representatives requires experienced and politically grounded leadership, warning that presenting an inexperienced candidate could affect the party’s electoral chances in the constituency.
Reaffirming their position, the group urged the APC leadership to reconsider the decision and restore the ticket to aspirants who participated directly in the race for the Okigwe North Federal Constituency seat.
The statement concluded with an expression of hope that the APC leadership and Governor Hope Uzodimma would “do the needful” by revisiting the nomination process in the interest of unity, justice, and the party’s future in Okigwe Zone ahead of the 2027 elections.
