Owerri Archdiocese Ordains 14 New Catholic Priests, Raising Total to 452

The Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri recorded another significant milestone in its evangelization mission on Saturday, August 1, 2026, as 14 new priests were ordained during a solemn Pontifical Mass at the Assumpta Cathedral, Owerri, presided over by His Grace, Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, the Catholic Archbishop of Owerri Archdiocese and Metropolitan of the Owerri Ecclesiastical Province.
The sacred ordination ceremony, attended by thousands of Catholic faithful, religious men and women, priests, seminarians, family members, and well-wishers, increased the number of priests in the Archdiocese to 452, further strengthening its pastoral workforce.
Among the newly ordained priests are Rev. Fr. Saviour Obinna Akalador, Rev. Fr. Daniel Izuchi Opara, Rev. Fr. Sunday Chukwuemeka Iwueze, Rev. Fr. Kingsley Ndukwe Ibe, Rev. Fr. Osinachi Ugorji, and Rev. Fr. Gregory Chibueze Ogu, alongside eight other priests who were ordained into the sacred priesthood after successfully completing years of philosophical, spiritual, pastoral, and theological formation.
The ordination Mass drew the presence of several senior clerics, including the Very Rev. Fr. Reginald Egbu, Vicar General of the Owerri Archdiocese; Very Rev. Fr. Hyginus Ogbonna; Rev. Fr. Brigadier-General (Rtd.) Charles Iroegbu, and many other priests from within and outside the Archdiocese.
Delivering his homily, Archbishop Ugorji reminded the newly ordained priests that the priesthood is a sacred vocation dedicated to service rather than personal ambition or material gain.
He urged them to remain faithful to Christ, uphold holiness of life, and cultivate an intimate relationship with God who called and sustained them throughout their approximately sixteen years of formation.
The Archbishop warned against the growing temptation for some ministers to compromise their sacred calling because of prevailing economic difficulties.
According to him, genuine priesthood demands unwavering fidelity to God, moral integrity, humility, and total dedication to the salvation of souls.
"We recognize that times are difficult, and economic hardship has pushed many people into compromising situations. However, being ordained today is not a licence to make mockery of God or the sacred priesthood. Rather, it is a call to serve God and humanity with sincerity and holiness. Remain faithful because God will always come through for His faithful servants," Archbishop Ugorji said.
He also expressed appreciation to the parents and families of the newly ordained priests for nurturing their sons in the Christian faith and supporting their vocation.
According to him, guiding children towards God remains one of the greatest investments any parent can make, noting that the Church continues to rely on faithful families in raising future priests and religious.
The liturgical celebration was marked by deep reverence, inspiring hymns, joyful processions, and the traditional rites of priestly ordination, including the laying on of hands, the Prayer of Ordination, the vesting with priestly garments, and the anointing of hands with Sacred Chrism.
Immediately after the ordination rites, the atmosphere transformed into one of celebration as parishioners, relatives, and friends congratulated the newly ordained priests amid music, dancing, cultural displays, and elaborate receptions held at different locations.
Many faithful described the occasion as a moment of hope for the Church, especially at a time when society faces numerous moral, economic, and social challenges.
Several worshippers expressed gratitude to God for the gift of new priests, saying their ordination would strengthen evangelization, sacramental ministry, youth formation, and pastoral outreach across the Archdiocese.
Speaking after the Mass, some parishioners commended the Archbishop for his fatherly guidance and timely message on integrity and faithful service.
They noted that his admonition serves as a reminder that priesthood is fundamentally about sacrifice, compassion, and total commitment to Christ rather than the pursuit of wealth or worldly recognition.
Parents of some of the newly ordained priests described the day as the fulfilment of years of prayers, sacrifice, and trust in God's providence.
The Owerri Catholic Archdiocese remains one of Nigeria's most prominent ecclesiastical jurisdictions and has continued to produce priests who serve in dioceses, seminaries, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, missionary territories, and chaplaincies both within Nigeria and abroad.
The latest ordination reflects the Archdiocese's sustained commitment to priestly formation and the continued growth of vocations despite contemporary social and economic pressures.
With the addition of the 14 newly ordained priests, the Archdiocese now has a total of 452 diocesan priests, reaffirming its position as one of the leading centres of Catholic evangelization and priestly formation in the country.
The ceremony concluded with prayers for the new priests as they prepare to begin their pastoral assignments in various parishes and ministries, carrying forward the Church's mission of proclaiming the Gospel and serving humanity.
