Oyo Police Arrest Three Suspected Railway Vandals, Recover Rail Tracks Worth ₦200m

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested three suspected members of a railway vandalism syndicate and recovered stolen railway tracks valued at approximately ₦200 million in a major intelligence-led operation aimed at protecting critical national infrastructure.
The suspects, identified as Waheed Ayinde (54), Muhammed Sani (27), and Hassan Ibrahim (22), were apprehended on July 14, 2026, during an operation carried out by operatives of the Command Monitoring Unit in the Gambari, Orile-Igbon area of Oyo State.
According to the Police, officers also recovered a large quantity of vandalized railway tracks and a HOWO truck with registration number CAL 972 XA, allegedly used to transport the stolen rail materials.
Confirming the development, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said the successful operation followed credible intelligence received from members of the public regarding the movement of suspected stolen railway infrastructure.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the recovered railway tracks were allegedly removed from locations in Niger State and were being transported to Lagos State for illegal sale or disposal.
The Police disclosed that members of the syndicate reportedly used Ogbomoso as a temporary storage point before attempting to move the stolen railway materials to their final destination.
"The operation was intelligence-driven and made possible through timely information from vigilant members of the public," Ayanlade said.
He added that the swift intervention by the Command Monitoring Unit prevented the suspects from successfully transporting the stolen rail tracks, thereby averting further damage to national infrastructure.
The Police spokesperson said investigations have been expanded to uncover the full network behind the alleged criminal operation.
He noted that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate believed to have participated in the theft, transportation and possible sale of the railway materials.
The suspects are expected to face prosecution upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Oyo State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding critical national assets and urged Nigerians to continue providing credible information that would assist security agencies in combating economic sabotage and organized crime.
Railway vandalism has become one of the major threats confronting Nigeria's transportation sector in recent years. Criminal groups frequently target rail tracks, signalling equipment, cables and other metallic components, which are often sold as scrap metal.
Security experts warn that vandalism of railway infrastructure not only results in huge financial losses but also poses serious risks to passenger safety, disrupts train operations and undermines government investments aimed at modernizing the country's railway network.
The Federal Government has invested hundreds of billions of naira in railway development across the country to improve transportation, facilitate commerce and reduce pressure on the nation's highways. However, repeated attacks on railway infrastructure continue to threaten these gains.
Authorities have repeatedly called for stronger collaboration between security agencies, host communities and the public to protect public assets from criminal activities.

The latest arrest has generated widespread reactions from Nigerians, many of whom commended the Oyo State Police Command for the successful operation while expressing concern over the persistent vandalism of public infrastructure.
Many citizens described railway vandalism as an act of economic sabotage that ultimately affects every Nigerian through increased government expenditure on repairs and disruption of essential transportation services.
Some residents called for stricter punishment for convicted vandals, arguing that the destruction of national assets slows economic development and discourages investment in public infrastructure.
Others urged scrap metal dealers to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by refusing to purchase suspicious railway materials and promptly reporting individuals attempting to sell government property.
Public affairs analysts also stressed the importance of community policing, noting that the intelligence supplied by residents played a decisive role in the successful operation. They argued that stronger partnerships between citizens and security agencies would significantly reduce crimes targeting critical national infrastructure.
Security observers further recommended improved surveillance systems, deployment of modern monitoring technology and increased patrols around railway corridors to deter future acts of vandalism.
The Police have assured Nigerians that investigations will continue until every member of the alleged syndicate is identified and brought to justice.
With the recovery of railway tracks valued at about ₦200 million, the operation represents another significant effort by security agencies to combat infrastructure theft and protect investments intended to improve transportation and economic development across Nigeria.
