Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has held a series of high-level meetings with key members of the South African government, focusing on issues affecting Nigerians and other African migrants living in the country.
Obi disclosed that he met with South African Minister of Home Affairs, Leon Schreiber; Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa; and Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, during his visit to South Africa.
According to Obi, the discussions were frank and productive, centering on the growing challenges confronting both Nigeria and South Africa. Key issues raised included migration management, economic pressures, youth unemployment, security concerns, and the tensions experienced by African foreign nationals residing in South Africa.
The former Anambra State governor noted that both sides explored practical ways of strengthening cooperation between the two countries to address shared socio-economic and security challenges. He emphasized the need for constructive engagement and policies that promote peaceful coexistence, economic inclusion, and mutual respect among African nations.
Obi further stressed the importance of sustained dialogue between governments, political leaders, and relevant stakeholders as a means of fostering stronger bilateral relations and improving the welfare of citizens across the continent.
The meetings come amid ongoing discussions on migration, xenophobia, and regional economic integration in Africa, issues that continue to shape relations between Nigeria and South Africa.
He expressed optimism that continued collaboration and open communication would help address concerns affecting migrants while advancing the broader goals of African unity, development, and prosperity.
