Police Probe Alleged Electoral Data Breach, Question INEC Official and FCT Minister’s Aide

The Nigeria Police Force has commenced an investigation into an alleged breach of electoral data security, leading to the arrest of an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the questioning of a media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, Mr. Lere Olayinka.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) is spearheading the investigation into allegations involving unauthorized access to electoral records, suspected misuse of sensitive database information, and the alleged disclosure of confidential voter-related documents.
As part of the ongoing probe, an INEC official, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, was reportedly taken into custody to assist investigators. Authorities are also said to be examining the circumstances surrounding information allegedly shared on social media by Olayinka.
The investigation reportedly followed a formal complaint submitted on behalf of INEC, alleging possible offences including criminal conspiracy, cyber-related misconduct, and the unauthorized dissemination of classified electoral information.
The controversy emerged after screenshots purportedly containing voter registration and transfer details were circulated online. The documents were allegedly shared in relation to a voter transfer involving Nollywood actor and politician Emeka Ike from Imo State to the Federal Capital Territory.
The publication of the information generated widespread public debate and raised concerns among stakeholders regarding the security, confidentiality, and integrity of Nigeria’s electoral database.
While the police investigation remains ongoing, authorities have yet to release an official statement detailing the specific findings or any formal charges connected to the matter.
Observers say the outcome of the probe could have broader implications for electoral data protection, cybersecurity compliance, and public confidence in the management of sensitive voter information ahead of future elections.
