‎President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately take steps to vacate the court order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government, citing the need to preserve public confidence in the integrity of the state's forthcoming governorship election.

‎The directive was contained in a personally signed statement issued by the President on Thursday, August 6, 2026, barely a day after reports emerged that the anti-graft agency had secured a court order placing the state's accounts under a "Post No Debit" restriction as part of an ongoing investigation.
‎
‎President Tinubu clarified that his intervention was not intended to obstruct the EFCC from carrying out its constitutional and statutory responsibilities. He acknowledged that the anti-corruption agency acted pursuant to a valid court order but expressed deep concern over the timing of the action.

‎According to the President, every action taken by federal institutions is often interpreted by Nigerians as having his direct approval, even when he has no prior knowledge of such decisions. He reiterated his long-standing policy that anti-corruption agencies should operate independently, professionally and without political interference.

‎Tinubu noted that Osun State is only days away from its governorship election and warned that no action by any federal institution should create the impression that the Federal Government is attempting to influence the electoral process.

‎He stressed that safeguarding the credibility, fairness and transparency of Nigeria's democracy compelled him to intervene in what he described as the overriding public interest.
‎Consequently, the President directed the EFCC to return to court without delay to vacate the freezing order and discontinue every action instituted against the Osun State Government in connection with the account restriction.

‎The controversy began after the EFCC reportedly obtained a court order freezing one of the Osun State Government's accounts domiciled with First Bank as part of an investigation. The affected account was reportedly used for the payment of workers' salaries and other government obligations.

‎The development generated widespread political debate after Governor Ademola Adeleke alleged that the action formed part of attempts to destabilise his administration ahead of the August 15 governorship election. The state government warned that restricting access to public funds so close to the election could disrupt governance and fuel allegations of political intimidation.
