The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has cautioned against ongoing political campaigns and public projections linking former President Goodluck Jonathan to a potential presidential bid in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on the growing political speculation ahead of the next election cycle, Wike urged security agencies to closely monitor activities capable of generating political tension, stressing that no individual should be presented as a candidate without an official declaration of interest.
According to the FCT Minister, attributing presidential ambitions to Jonathan without any formal announcement could create unnecessary political uncertainty and fuel avoidable controversies within the country's political space.
Wike emphasized that in Nigeria's democratic process, political candidacy is determined through established legal and electoral procedures rather than public assumptions or perceived body language.
“In Nigerian politics, a candidate is not known by mere body language. A candidate is someone who has contested an election, won, and had results declared with a certificate of return issued,” he stated.
The minister further reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining law and order in the Federal Capital Territory, warning that his administration would not tolerate actions capable of undermining public peace and security.
“I will not allow any breach of peace in the FCT,” Wike added.
His remarks come amid increasing political consultations, alignments, and speculation surrounding the 2027 presidential election, with several prominent political figures being mentioned as possible contenders despite not formally declaring their intentions.
Political observers note that discussions about potential candidates have intensified across party lines as stakeholders position themselves ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive electoral season.
