Former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) Vice-Presidential Candidate, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has said that if former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi becomes President of Nigeria, he would not divert public funds and would not permit members of his cabinet to engage in corruption.

Amaechi made the remarks while speaking during an interview on AIT’s Democracy Today, where he discussed corruption and its implications for Nigeria’s security, education and economic development. Reports of the interview quoted him as stressing that the conduct and “body language” of a president could significantly influence the behaviour of officials serving under the administration.

According to Amaechi, the personal example set by a president is capable of establishing the ethical direction of government. He argued that when the head of government demonstrates restraint and rejects the misuse of public resources, members of the administration are more likely to operate within established standards of accountability.

The former governor’s comments came despite the fact that he is currently the ADC’s vice-presidential candidate on the ticket with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential election. The ADC formally announced Amaechi as its vice-presidential candidate on June 15, 2026.

Obi’s Anambra Governance Record
Peter Obi served as governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2013, with his tenure interrupted by his removal from office before he was reinstated following a court process. He subsequently completed his constitutional tenure in March 2014.

During his administration, Obi’s government recorded interventions in education, healthcare, public infrastructure and state finances. His administration returned a large number of schools previously managed by the government to missionary ownership, alongside grants and other support for their operation. His official record also lists the construction and rehabilitation of schools and investment in science and technical education.

In the health sector, his administration supported the development of the state’s healthcare infrastructure, including the establishment of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital in Awka and maternal and child healthcare centres. Several health institutions also obtained accreditation during the period.

Obi's administration also invested in Anambra State's tertiary institutions and provided funding for infrastructure and academic facilities. These interventions have subsequently formed part of the record cited by supporters and commentators when assessing his tenure as governor.

However, assessments of Obi’s record have varied, with different commentators placing emphasis on different aspects of his administration. The documented projects and financial decisions therefore provide a basis for examining his tenure without assuming that a future federal administration would necessarily reproduce the same outcomes.

Amaechi’s Political Profile
Amaechi, born on May 27, 1965, in Rivers State, began his political career in the Rivers State House of Assembly, where he represented Ikwerre Constituency and served as Speaker from 1999 to 2007. He became Governor of Rivers State in 2007 and was re-elected in 2011. He also served as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum between 2011 and 2015.

Following his tenure as governor, Amaechi served as Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation from 2015 to 2022 under President Muhammadu Buhari. His tenure at the ministry was associated with major railway and transportation projects, including the Abuja–Kaduna, Itakpe–Warri and Lagos–Ibadan standard-gauge railway corridors.

His latest political role places him on the ADC ticket as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2027 presidential election.

Amaechi’s remarks have consequently drawn attention because they represent a positive assessment of Obi’s personal approach to public resources from a politician who is contesting the same presidential election cycle from a different ticket.

The comments also place renewed focus on the broader debate over whether the personal conduct of political leaders can influence institutional standards, particularly in the fight against corruption and the management of public resources.
