The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a significant political setback in Bauchi State following the defection of two serving senators, Senator Shehu Buba Umar and Senator Sama’ila Dahuwa, to the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development comes amid growing discontent within the APC over the party’s internal processes and preparations for the forthcoming electoral cycle in the state.
Senator Shehu Buba Umar, who had initially expressed interest in contesting the APC governorship ticket for the 2027 election, reportedly withdrew from the party’s primary race barely 24 hours before the scheduled exercise. He had cited concerns over alleged manipulation of the primary process and a perceived lack of internal democracy within the party.
Following his resignation from the APC, Senator Buba has now emerged as the consensus governorship candidate of the PRP for the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State, positioning himself as one of the major contenders in the race.
In a related development, Senator Sama’ila Dahuwa has also formally joined the PRP. Dahuwa, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC several months ago, was reportedly dissatisfied with indications that he might not secure the APC’s senatorial ticket for another term in office.
His decision to leave the ruling party was subsequently followed by his adoption as the PRP consensus candidate for the Bauchi North Senatorial District in the 2027 elections.
Political observers believe the dual defections could reshape the political landscape in Bauchi State, particularly as parties begin to consolidate support and position candidates ahead of the next general elections.
The APC leadership in Bauchi State has yet to issue an official response to the departure of the two lawmakers and the circumstances surrounding their exit from the party.
