APGA Ends Anambra LG Campaign, Sets Sights on Victory in Anambra East

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has concluded its campaign ahead of the Anambra State local government elections scheduled for Saturday, August 29, with party leaders expressing confidence in victory across the state, particularly in Anambra East Local Government Area.
The campaign grand finale was held on Wednesday at Otuocha, the headquarters of Anambra East, where Governor Chukwuma Soludo led senior government officials, party leaders, candidates and supporters in mobilising voters for the poll.
Soludo said APGA was taking the election seriously and had mobilised its structures across the 21 local government areas of the state. He described Anambra as a strong base for the party and urged residents to sustain their support for APGA at the grassroots.
The governor said his administration had continued to prioritise accountability, transparency and sustainable development in local government administration.
He also highlighted the payment of salaries and entitlements to primary school teachers and healthcare workers, alongside programmes in education, healthcare and youth empowerment.
Soludo thanked residents of Anambra East for their support during the 2025 governorship election, noting that the area had contributed significantly to his victory.
The governor's confidence comes against the backdrop of the structure of the August 29 council election. According to reports from the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), APGA and the Young Progressives Party (YPP) are the only parties participating in the election. APGA is fielding candidates across all 21 LGAs, while YPP is contesting in Anambra East.
Anambra East is therefore expected to be the only local government area where there is a competitive chairmanship contest, with YPP challenging APGA's candidate. Vanguard reported that APGA is set to contest unopposed in the other 20 LGAs.
At the Otuocha rally, the Mayor of Anambra East, Ifeanyichukwu Chinweze, commended Soludo for what he described as sustained attention to the local government.
Chinweze said the Otuocha Market project was about 70 per cent complete, adding that the facility was expected to serve traders and communities across the Omambala region and neighbouring parts of Kogi State.
He also said peace had been restored in communities that had previously experienced conflicts, attributing the development to sustained efforts by the government and local stakeholders.
Other speakers at the rally included the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Tobechukwu Nweke; member representing Anambra East Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Barrister Obi Nweke; APGA's federal constituency candidate, Hon. Chinedu Obidigwe; Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze; APGA's Anambra North senatorial candidate, Senator Stella Oduah; and other party leaders.
The speakers urged residents to vote for APGA and support the party's candidates during Saturday's election.
Party leaders also pointed to the Soludo administration's free education programme, free antenatal and delivery services and youth empowerment initiatives as some of the programmes they said should influence voters' decisions.
Recent reports indicate that Soludo has also cited the administration's recruitment of teachers and medical personnel and the "One Youth, Two Skills" empowerment initiative among its major achievements.
The rally featured colourful displays by supporters from the 15 wards in Anambra East, with party faithful marching through Otuocha in support of the APGA candidate.
With campaigning now concluded, attention has shifted to Saturday's poll, when voters across Anambra State will elect local government chairmen and councillors.
ANSIEC has said preparations for the election are complete, including the training of electoral personnel and logistical arrangements.
In Anambra East, the contest is expected to attract particular attention because it is the only LGA where APGA faces a direct chairmanship challenge. The outcome will provide an early indication of the strength of the ruling party's grassroots structure as voters head to the polls on August 29.
