The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has intensified its mobilisation efforts in Kwara State with a nine-kilometre procession through major parts of Ilorin, as the party continues preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The mobilisation exercise, which was held in Ilorin, attracted party supporters and members who moved through several major locations in the state capital, including Offa Garage, Post Office, Taiwo Road, General Hospital, Surulere, Emir’s Palace and Oja Oba.

The procession formed part of the party’s efforts to expand its grassroots presence in Kwara State and promote its proposed presidential ticket involving Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking during the exercise, the Kwara State NDC Chairman, Abdulsalami Abdulganiyu, said the party was seeking to build on the support recorded by Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election.

Obi contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party and secured 31,166 votes in Kwara State. According to the party, a significant proportion of the votes came from Ilorin West and Ilorin South.

Abdulganiyu said the support base established by Obi in the last presidential election, coupled with the political influence of former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, could provide a strong foundation for the NDC's campaign in Kwara State in 2027.

He said the party was focused on translating its growing political structures into wider grassroots support across the state.
The mobilisation also provided an opportunity for the party’s candidates to address economic challenges and other concerns affecting residents.

The NDC candidate for Kwara Central Senatorial District, Abdulrasheed Omoda, said the party was positioning itself as an alternative political platform capable of addressing economic difficulties confronting residents.

Omoda spoke about the economic conditions in the state and raised concerns over the impact of hardship on households.
However, a claim made during the exercise concerning Kwara State’s poverty rate was challenged by figures referenced from the National Bureau of Statistics’ Multidimensional Poverty Index.

The development has highlighted the importance of relying on verified statistical data when assessing the extent of poverty and economic hardship across the state.
Also speaking during the mobilisation, the NDC candidate for Kwara North Senatorial District, Thomas Gana, said dissatisfaction with the ruling party was increasing among some residents in his constituency.

Gana said the NDC had continued to establish and strengthen its political structures across Kwara North in preparation for the 2027 elections.

He maintained that the party’s grassroots mobilisation was aimed at reaching voters across communities and creating a stronger political presence ahead of the polls.
The Ilorin procession is part of the NDC’s broader efforts to expand its structures and mobilise supporters across Kwara State.

With the 2027 general elections approaching, the party is seeking to consolidate its presence in the state and build support for its proposed Peter Obi-Rabiu Kwankwaso political alliance.

The mobilisation also signals the increasing political activities by opposition groups seeking to challenge the ruling party and present alternative political choices to voters ahead of the 2027 elections.
