Oguta NDC Candidate Udogwu Pledges Affordable Education, Better Basic Infrastructure

OWERRI, Imo State — The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Oguta State Constituency in the 2027 Imo State House of Assembly election, Hon. Ikechukwu David Udogwu, has pledged to prioritise basic education and make education more affordable for constituents if elected.
Udogwu made the commitment on Saturday, August 22, 2026, while interacting with stakeholders in Owerri alongside some NDC chieftains, including Hon. Ezennaya Okoro, Mr. Daniel Njamanze Amos Echefu.
The candidate expressed concern over what he described as the poor state of basic education infrastructure across Oguta, arguing that inadequate attention to schools was undermining the future of children in the constituency.
He said basic education should be regarded as a fundamental component of social security because it provides children with the knowledge and skills required to become productive members of society.
“Basic education is the best security every child needs,” Udogwu said, while stressing the need for greater investment in schools and other basic social services.
He particularly expressed concern about the condition of educational facilities in parts of Oguta, citing Agwa as an example of communities where he said residents were facing serious challenges with basic infrastructure.
“Oguta, as a historical port of call, is serially and seriously lagging behind in education attention. The infrastructure has collapsed, with little or no incentive for learning. This is unfortunate,” he said.
Udogwu called on stakeholders, government authorities and community leaders to pay greater attention to the development of primary and basic education facilities in the constituency.
He also questioned the level of development in oil-producing communities in Oguta, arguing that the benefits of the area's natural resources should be reflected in improved social infrastructure and human development.
“Just go to Agwa, and you will weep for the good people of Oguta. With oil revenues and allocations, yet the basic institutions of social repair, social security and the economy are being denied,” he said.
The NDC candidate said his proposed representation would focus on accountability and advocacy for improved basic education and primary healthcare, particularly for children.
According to him, education and healthcare are essential pillars for building a secure and productive society, and elected representatives should ensure that constituents receive meaningful benefits from government programmes and policies.
“My representation will be accountable to the people, particularly on basic education and primary healthcare for our children and for social security, because education is the best social security any nation can provide to the people,” Udogwu said.
He also linked his campaign agenda to the wider policy direction of the NDC's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, whom he described as a leader who places a high premium on education, healthcare and a productive economy.
Udogwu said he believed that collaboration between effective representation at the constituency level and a government committed to human capital development could contribute to transforming Oguta.
“Under his led federal government and my representation of the good people of Oguta, there will be a new Oguta,” he said.
The candidate subsequently appealed to voters in Oguta State Constituency to make what he described as an informed choice in the 2027 elections.
“I want to appeal to our people to make an informed choice this time and vote for me to represent them at the House come 2027 and Mr. Peter Obi for president for a new Nigeria,” he said.
Udogwu's campaign message places education, healthcare and social infrastructure at the centre of his proposed legislative agenda. His emphasis on basic education also reflects growing concerns among communities over the condition of public schools and access to quality social services.
He said his familiarity with the constituency and its challenges would help shape his approach to representation if elected, promising to pursue initiatives aimed at addressing what he identified as the most pressing social needs of the people.
The 2027 election is expected to generate increased political activity across Oguta and other parts of Imo State as candidates and political parties begin to present their programmes to voters ahead of the poll.
